  Overview

Inside and o utside the classroom, our students engage in cutting-edge research, artistic production, innovation and entrepreneurship, experiential learning, and global exploration.

  The First-Year Success team ensure s that undergraduates are well prepared to make the most of the vast array of opportunities BU offers . S even Assistant Directors of First-Year Success (ADs) collaborate with faculty and staff across campus to support our first-year students , connect them with opportunities, resources, and people, and engag e them in the intellectual life of the community .

  Responsibilities

  The Assistant Directors (ADs) are responsible for supporting students’ academic and personal success during their first year at BU . Each AD is assigned a cohort of first-year students . ADs provide their students with holistic advising and academic coaching, and they connect students with relevant opportunities and resources on campus . In addition to providing individualized support for first-year students, the AD s collaborate with faculty and central offices to develop and run first-year programming. Reporting to the Director f or Undergraduate Advising and Student Su ccess in the Provost’s Office (https://www.bu.edu/advising/your-advisors/meet-the-undergraduate-affairs-advising-team/) , AD s support efforts such as new student orientation and take on other duties as assigned . Assistant Directors regularly perform the following responsibilities:

  Holistic Advisin g: Supplement the work of academic advisors in the School/College by meeting and corresponding with first-year students regarding the transition to college, personal interests and goals, academic exploration , and participation in high-impact educational experiences (e.g., first-year seminars, research with faculty, experiential learning, study abroad, living-learning communities, and internships) . Provide 1:1 academic coaching to help students achieve their academic goals . Provide support to students experiencing academic challenges .

  Collaborating and Coordinating: Collaborate and coordinate with School/College advisors and staff in central units (e.g., Newbury Center, College Access and Student Success, Educational Resource Center, Dean of Students Office, Global Programs, Student Wellbeing , and Student Health Services ) to create a seamless web of support for first-year students . Connect students as needed with campus resources that support student academic and personal wellbeing .

  Programming : Create and implement inclusive programming that fosters engagement with the intellec tual life of the BU community . Programming f acilitate s faculty-student interaction outside the classroom , promote s participation in high-impact educational experiences , and fosters a greater sense of belonging by building community .

  First-Year Success Seminars: Lead first-year success seminars that meet general education requirements and that promote academic resilience and student wellbeing.

  Required Skills

  A cover letter is required for consideration.

  Bachelor's degree and 5-8 years of experience OR Master's Degree and 3-5 years of experience

  Higher education experience preferred.

  Interest in student success and the first-year experience.

  Experience advising students or student organizations.

  Strong interpersonal skills and exemplary written and oral communication abilities.

  Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  Capacity to build positive and collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

  Highly organized and attentive to detail. Able to work independently and as part of a team.

  This role is eligible to apply for a remote-work arrangement of up to one day per week. Some evening work may be required.
