About the Department
The Office of the Provost at the University of Chicago was establishedin 1963 when Edward H. Levi was appointed the first Provost of theUniversity. Since then, the responsibilities of the Provost and theOffice have expanded to include not only academic planning andappointments but academic initiatives, arts programming, space planningand allocation, the University\'s budget, diversity initiatives, facultyprogram development, and many other manners of academic andadministrative support. The staff in the Office of the Provost supportthe University\'s community of scholars, their shared ideals, and thecore values that make the University a singular intellectualdestination. Together with the University\'s deans, directors, anddepartment chairs, the Office of the Provost provides the opportunities,infrastructure, and resources that encourage our faculty and otherscholars to pursue their finest work.
The Ivy+ Faculty Advancement Network (FAN), a consortium of 13 nationalresearch universities seeking collaborations of consequence to advancediversity and inclusion in the American professoriate. FAN is a new andentrepreneurial venture that began in 2021 with the hiring of itsinaugural Executive Director. The University of Chicago is theadministrative host of the consortium.
Job Summary
The Assistant Director is a part-time position with the Ivy+ FacultyAdvancement Network (FAN), a consortium of 13 national researchuniversities seeking collaborations of consequence to advance diversityand inclusion in the American professoriate. FAN is a new andentrepreneurial venture that began in 2021; the Assistant Director willbe FAN\'s second employee.
The Assistant Director serves a key role in coordinating, implementing,and measuring the impact of the Ivy+ Mellon Leadership (IML) Fellowsprogram, a FAN initiative supported by the Mellon Foundation until March31, 2026. The Assistant Director will play a leadership role in allaspects of the IML Fellowship experience, especially the Institute onInquiry, Equity & Leadership in the Academic Department. The AssistantDirector will partner closely with the Executive Director to be deeplyinvolved with mentor selection and coordination, curriculum oversight,participant support, marketing and communication efforts, speakermanagement, program assessment, et cetera. The Institute consistsannually of two three-day in-person events and five three-hour virtualevents. In addition, the Mellon Foundation initiative includes onetwo-day in-person event annually and several small, virtual meetings.
The Assistant Director will coordinate leadership development content,both online and in-classroom, during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academicyears. The Assistant Director will also resolve day-to-day operationalchallenges and share responsibility with the Executive Director forimplementing administrative policies and procedures for FAN.
Responsibilities
Implementing multi-modal programs of equity-minded leadershipdevelopment
Design learning opportunities via a variety of delivery modalities(i.e., in-person classroom, webinars, asynchronous learning courses,training videos, etc.) for leadership development content tailoredfor research university faculty and administrators.Implement instructionally-sound learning solutions, industrystandards, and innovative methods to improve the experience of adultlearners participating in workshops, seminars, and retreats.Facilitate both in-classroom and online programs and meetings,including speaking in-person and on-screen before a live audience.Evaluate, analyze, and report on the effectiveness an impact of FANprograms, ensuring the tools to measure impact are efficient.Creating and managing content and communication in accordance with Ivy+standards
Manage the Institute\'s Canvas learning management system (LMS), incollaboration with FAN\'s partner eCornell.Manage marketing and communication activities for the Institute andFAN, including website maintenance, social media, and emailmarketing, ensuring opportunities are promoted to Institute Fellowsand alumni across the consortium and beyond.Draft and coordinate correspondence and other updates to bedistributed to FAN stakeholder groups.Follow FAN and Ivy+ standards through all Fellowship and Institutematerials and digital library of program resources.Managing logistics, operations, schedules, financial reporting, etc.
Inform and execute the operational aspects of the Ivy+ Mellon LeadershipFellowship and the Institute, as well as meetings of FAN\'s SteeringCommittee.
Coordinate logistics (e.g., event materials, travel arrangements,payment processing) for FAN subject matter experts, consultants, andFellows.
Schedule and organize meetings, including assistance in setting upconferences and/or FAN Steering Committee meetings.
