The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is the largest academic unit at Rutgers University and the center of the undergraduate experience on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus and is comprised of 41 academic departments spanning the liberal arts. SAS offers more than 100 majors and minors across the life sciences, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and mathematical and physical sciences with research centers and institutes across the school. Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Dean III for the School of Arts and Sciences - Academic Services. The Assistant Dean is a member of the specialized staff concerned with academic standing, warning, probation, dismissal, retention programming, and assessment for undergraduate students at academic risk, as well as re-enrollment for students who left Rutgers in poor academic standing or were dismissed and would like to return.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides in-depth academic advising about numerous subjects to SAS undergraduate students.
  • Identifies students at risk by coordinating the biannual academic review (after the fall and spring semesters) of the records of all 20,000 SAS undergraduates to determine which students should be placed on academic warning or probation.
  • Coordinates an annual review (after the spring semester) of all 20,000 records to determine which students should be dismissed.
  • Ensures the accuracy of the information and makes exceptions as appropriate.
  • Provides notifications to the students, works with the students placed on warning and probation to devise individualized academic plans to achieve academic success, and conducts in-person individual consultations and exit counseling for dismissed students.
  • Coordinates the dismissal appeals process.
  • Advises and coordinates the Faculty Committee on Academic Standing.
  • Provides accurate and sound academic advising to students who come to the SAS Advising Centers.
  • Interacts professionally and compassionately with all undergraduate students, as well as their parents.
  • Participates in Office of Advising and Academic Services programs and processes, as well as presentations to the university community.
  • Participates in university-wide, SAS-wide, and OAAS-wide duties and functions and to provide coordination, advice, and supervision.
  • Participates in programs to assist students at risk, including the two nationally recognized programs that address first-year students determined to be at academic risk at the end of their first semester at Rutgers, the First-year Retention Program and the Academic Success Seminar.
  • Develops new initiatives, including web-based programs and tutorials.
  • Assesses, refines, and updates programs.
  • Processes re-enrollment requests from students who left Rutgers in poor academic standing or were dismissed for academic reasons.
  • Decides eligibility for reenrollment, determining conditions attached to individual re-enrollments, communicating those to the individual student and all necessary follow-up to ensure adherence to policy.
  • Adjudicates exception to policy where there are extenuating circumstances, and evaluating eligibility for the Academic Amnesty program.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A Master's degree,
  • A minimum of three years' experience in an academic setting.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across the university with the goal of providing outstanding service to seniors, as well as the general student population.
  • Must have excellent computer skills and be comfortable communicating via social media channels.
  • Must have working knowledge of all Office applications and be able to learn new systems at a rapid pace.
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail to successfully work with a large, complex, and varied student population.
  • Must be knowledgeable about all aspects of undergraduate student services and be an authority on all issues regarding students at academic risk.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three to five years' experience in an academic setting.
Equipment Utilized
  • IMS, Microsoft Office Suite, Canvas, Salesforce, WebNow, Perceptive Content, MyAdvisor, Zoom, WebEx and Degree Navigator are used in a daily capacity in desktop and web-based platforms. Various customized databases are used daily.
