  Nature of Work

  The City of Bellingham is continuously recruiting for qualified lifeguards at our year-round facility and summer beaches. This position is responsible for lifeguarding, basic public interaction with pool patrons and students, customer service, team leadership, swimming instruction, first aid and maintenance.

  This position will start at Step 1 ($16.28/hour). The 2023 salary range for this position is $16.28/hour - $19.88/hour. Employees receive step increases on completion of 2080 hours in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement (https://cob.org/about/employment/labor-agreements-pay-schedule) and City policy.

  In a regular non-benefitted position with the City of Bellingham, employees are allowed to work up to 69 hours per calendar month and flex up to full time for up to four months each calendar year.

  City of Bellingham employees receive access to our employee assistance program. This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law. Employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.

  This position becomes represented by the Local 1937 bargaining unit after the completion of 1040 hours working an average of at least 12 hours per week, on an annual basis.

  This is an on-going recruitment to fill current and future staffing needs throughout the year. This recruitment may be closed at any time based on departmental needs.

  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  Lifeguards facility, program and patrons, identifying potential safety concerns and preventing accidents. Provides lifesaving skills, first aid, and CPR when necessary.

  Conducts high-quality swim lessons, American Red Cross training courses and aerobic classes to all levels and age groups.

  Cleans locker rooms, staff areas, beaches, and natatorium. Takes chemical tests and sanitizes pool after contamination incidents.

  Attends monthly in-service trainings and may assist with those trainings as needed.

  Completes all paperwork related to swim lessons, lifeguarding duties, and other assigned duties.

  ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED:

  Performs other related work of a similar nature and level.WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  Work is performed year-round in a humid indoor Aquatics Center and outdoors during the summer months at City-owned beaches. Employees often walk on wet or slick surfaces around pool area and waterfront areas.

  Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including:

  Swim 300 yards continuous using 100 yards crawl stroke, 100 yards breast stroke and 100 yards crawl or breast stroke;

  Swim 20 yards and retrieve 10-pound object from 6 feet and return 20 yards holding object at surface with both hands placing object on deck and climbing at side of pool within 1 minute and 40 seconds;

  Recover 10-pound object from 12 feet in dive tank and place object on deck;

  Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only with arms crossed on chest;

  Recover manikin from bottom of pool and remove from water;

  Perform 1 minute of CPR on manikin recovered from water.

  Ability to effectively communicate to exchange information, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool maintenance equipment, visual ability to read and analyze chemical tests, ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, ability to kneel, crouch, or bend at the waist to conduct tests, lift patrons, or materials of 50 lbs.

  Experience and Training

  Must be at least 16 years of age.

  Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills, mature judgement and ability to work with members of the public of all ages and abilities.

  Necessary Special Requirements

  Employment contingent upon passing a criminal convictions check, child and adult abuse records check and local background check (see Fair Hiring Practices below).

  Must pass a pre-employment swimming skills test, including but not limited to:

  Swim 300 yards continuous using 100 yards crawl stroke, 100 yards breast stroke and 100 yards crawl or breast stroke;

  Swim 20 yards and retrieve 10-pound object from 6 feet and return 20 yards holding object at surface with both hands placing object on deck and climbing at side of pool within 1 minute and 40 seconds;

  Employment contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug test. (This position is considered a safety sensitive position; therefore, the pre-employment drug test includes testing for marijuana. Positive test results will exclude an applicant from being hired)

  Ability to secure within one month of hire and maintain current certifications throughout employment in the following:

  Lifeguarding

  First Aid

  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers

  Administering Emergency Oxygen

  Bloodborne Pathogens Training

  Water Safety Instructor, preferred within 2 years of hire

  Lifeguard Training Instructor, preferred within 2 years of hire

  Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends with a minimum availability of 1 shift per week.

  Selection Process

  This is a continuous recruitment. As applications are received, they will be reviewed to ensure they are complete. All complete applications will be forwarded to the Aquatic Center for further review. Candidates selected to participate in testing will be notified via email by the Aquatic Center.
