  General Statement

  Montana State University seeks a visiting professor to teach six courses for the 2024-2025 academic year. This is non-tenured position. We are in need of someone to teach upper-division undergraduate courses in American politics and public policy. Specifically, they would need to cover a Congress course and an elections course in the fall semester and possibly introduction to American government. We would also look favorably upon candidates who could contribute either to our MPA program, research methods at the undergraduate level, and courses in administrative or constitutional law.

  We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  Teaching on-campus courses.

  Propose upper division courses or teach upper division courses already in the course catalog.

  Provide undergraduate advising.

  Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Master’s degree in political science, public policy field or a related field.

  Experience teaching undergraduates.

  Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department.

  Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  PhD or ABD status.

  Demonstrated experience teaching upper division courses in American politics, public policy, comparative politics, or related subjects.

  Demonstrated knowledge of college student development.

  Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.

  The Successful Candidate Will

  Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty and staff.

  The Department

  The Department of Political Science is a small department with 8 tenure-track faculty and 150-200 undergraduate students. We also offer an MPA degree and maintain about 20 MPA students on average. Our award-winning faculty bring rich and diverse scholarship into the classroom, engaging students in questions of ethics, power, identity, representation, policy, law and governance, at the state, national and global levels. Our integrated curriculum challenges students to develop critical thinking, communication, and research skills, preparing our graduates for citizenship and leadership, post-graduate study, and diverse employment opportunities. We are a collaborative and collegial department, value a culture of encouragement and mentorship, which would be particularly beneficial to an advanced graduate student or early career Ph.D.
