The accelerator development group in Argonne’s Physics Division built the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions, ATLAS, four decades ago and continues to be the world’s recognized leader in technology for superconducting particle accelerators for ion linacs and other applications. The group’s home base, ATLAS, is the US DOE National User Facility for stable ion beam research.
We are seeking a highly self-motivated technical professional to assist in the development of a broad range of accelerator systems for ATLAS and other projects.
In this position, you will:
Support the conception, engineering, design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of superconducting cavities and related subsystems intended for ATLAS, and other accelerator projects.
Support development, fabrication and maintenance of a variety of laboratory equipment and subsystems
Interface with the entire accelerator development and ATLAS staff to maintain, operate and improve the ATLAS accelerator facility and to deliver high-quality accelerator systems for other projects
Use computer based analytical and design tools to support accelerator development activities.

Education & Experience requirements are as follows:
Bachelor’s and 0 years or equivalentTo be considered you must have:
Strong self-motivation, desire and skill to perform a wide variety of hands-on and sometimes physically demanding laboratory work
Creativity in devising and implementing solutions to new and complex technical problems
Technical judgement based on the capability to recognize a problem and then apply basic principles of physics and engineering to devise solutions.
The capability to work effectively on technical problems in a fast-paced, demanding, and oftentimes, deadline driven environment
Some hands-on experience with vacuum systems, electronics, and RF systems
Some experience with modern mechanical engineering and design software
Strong communication skills and the desire and ability to discuss technical ideas closely with colleagues.
Strong housekeeping practices
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
