  Description

  The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences , School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time , 11-month/year, clinical non-tenure track faculty position in ambulatory practice servicing the animal populations of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice . This appointment may be at the rank of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. We are seeking an innovative and dynamic mixed/predominately large animal veterinarian with an interest and passion for providing primary patient care to horses, cattle, swine, dogs and poultry, providing production medicine services for integrated production systems, and for preparing veterinary students to serve rural communities and modern food production systems.

  The clinical track faculty hire will devote approximately 70-8 0 % effort to patient care , 5-1 0 % to didactic teaching and 10 -2 5 % to service.

  Patient Care : The clinical responsibility of this individual will be to provide individual and herd animal health care and production management services for animals owned by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). The successful candidate will provide veterinary care to approximately 18,000 head of cattle, 1,400 horses, 20,000 swine, 1,300 dogs and 240,000

  chickens owned by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). This clinician will be a member of a team of four veterinarians and one technician that serve as liaison between the personnel from TDCJ farm units, Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Agriculture Headquarters personnel and Texas A&M University, Texas Animal Health Commission,

  United States Department of Agriculture, Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, and Departments of Large and Small Animal Clinical Sciences. This team plays a major role in the instruction of 4th year veterinary students in preventive care, wellness and production medicine. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) enterprises provide collaborative

  opportunities with university colleagues.

  Teaching : The faculty member will participate primarily in the clinical instruction of 4 th year veterinary students assigned to the TDCJ service utilizing case material as a means of innovative teaching through clinical service . Additionally, opportunities will exist for participation in the updated and experiential pre-clinical curriculum through collaborative team-taught lectures, laboratories and small-group learning sessions . T he faculty member should be an effective teacher, and able to work with persons from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The development of innovative instructional delivery is encouraged , supported, and valued.

  Service : The faculty member will contribute to departmental camaraderie and a positive workplace through participation in academic service. Faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct ( VMBS Code of Professional Conduct - Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) (tamu.edu).   The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes nearly 45 faculty members with dynamic backgrounds and scholarly interests. Faculty members are located at the Texas A&M University campus in College Station and at the Veterinary Education Research and Outreach (VERO) program at the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Field Services, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services , Radiology , and TDCJ . The community of Bryan (https://www.destinationbryan.com/) and College Station (https://visit.cstx.gov/) have a combined approximate population of 270,000 and are a n expanding and diverse metropolitan area with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.

  Qualifications

  Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be able to hold a Texas state veterinary license, a DEA license, and USDA Category II accreditation . This position will be based at the Texas A&M University campus in College Station. Previous private and/or academic ambulatory practice experience is preferred as is being certified or interested in pursuing certification through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners or other specialty discipline ( i.e. ACVPM) . Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with animal caregivers , faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians , and staff.
