Areas of Responsibility: Academic Advising and Planning: Building authentic relationships with individuals with intersecting identities and perspectives is essential to advising. The responsibility of this role is to first make connections, then leverage these connections to support and guide students throughout their undergrad career in a personalized and individual way. This role will maintain a professional academic advising case-load in at least three or more majors. The target caseload is approximately 250 students. 75% * Advises students on academic program policies and co-constructs academic plans. * Proactively connects with students through (in-office and virtual) one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising, group advising, telephone and email communication. * Monitors student progress toward degree and provides support for those in academic difficulty. * Applies an extensive knowledge of curricular options, requirements, and professional opportunities to identify, compare, and contrast viable degree programs that match a student's interests and goals. * Promotes student engagement, networking and overall opportunities for belonging * Applies organizational, academic advising and student development theories to guide students with diverse needs, backgrounds, and talents to identify their strengths and make informed decisions. * Coaches students in a culturally informed manner through the major and career decision-making process by developing an individualized, action-oriented plan to assist students in overcoming barriers as they move toward degree progress and timely graduation. * Uses APLUS, PeopleSoft, APAS, and other software information systems to maintain accurate information about students in order to communicate throughout the campus system retention and graduation progress. * Using expert knowledge of University policies, unit procedures and practices, curriculum, and resources, help students navigate the university and determine when exceptions to practices may be appropriate. * Provides intentional and timely outreach to students who are non-responsive, possibly struggling a d/or not registered for future semesters. * Creates a network of relationships with students, faculty, and campus staff to effectively deliver advising and support services to students, and serves as a liaison to other units; e.g. faculty advisor/mentor training, faculty advisor assignments, etc. * Directs students to college/university support resources in moments of crisis, including financial, social, personal, and academic. * Contributes to identifying retention strategies and assessment of advising needs to better serve our Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+ and groups with intersecting identities (e.g., diverse abilities, veteran, first generation, etc). Programs and Initiatives: 15% * Contributes to collegiate programs such as new student orientation, first-year experience/orientation classes, second-year experience and commencement. * Develops and shares materials and resources to better advise a diverse population of students and remains current on inclusive and proactive advising strategies. * Works with major coordinators in assigned majors on Undergraduate Program Policy and Review Committee issues, including curriculum development, and course and program enhancements. * Participates in projects related to the continuous improvement of service in academic advising and student services (assist in review of how work flows and make ecommendations for improvement). * Participates in relevant CFANS student events including CFANS Parent's Weekend and Commencement events. * Potential to work on targeted projects or initiatives as determined by the advisor's strengths and specific interests. Professional Development, Service and Engagement in the field of Academic Advising: 10% * Commitment to ongoing social justice and racial equity work in order to identify, challenge, and remove barriers to access at the individual, community, and system level. * Serves on collegiate and university-level committees as requested by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs; e.g. Student Scholastic Standing Committee, Scholarship Committee, Honors and Awards Committee, Inclusive Excellence Advisory Committee, etc. * Participates in professional development activities at the collegiate, University and the broader community including attending and/or presenting at conferences, membership in professional associations, etc.; e.g. Academic Advising Network, MCPA, NACADA. Required Qualifications * BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant college level academic advising experience, or master's degree plus two years of relevant experience * Previous experience in an educational setting performing academic advising or student support activities * Knowledge and experience using various academic advising and student development theories. * Have a demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships and community with traditionally under resourced student populations including rural students and diverse students. * Strong computer and technological literacy as well as time management skills.
