About Academic Advisor

  Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

  Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Counseling, Education, Higher Education, Social Work, Teaching or related discipline. Three years of full-time experience (may include related graduate student experience), in advising, counseling and/or working with students in an educational capacity. Preferred Qualifications:

  Experience advising and/or counseling educationally and/or financially disadvantaged students. Experience working in higher education. Experience with an EOP or other Opportunity Program. Financial aid counseling experience with a knowledge of state and/or federal guidelines. Designing and implementing programs and events for students. Experience teaching new student seminars. Knowledge of student services related technology (ie: PeopleSoft, BrightSpace, EAB, etc.).

  Brief Description of Duties:

  The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is a supportive services college access program supported by both SUNY administration and Stony Brook University. The program recruits, admits and assists academically and economically disadvantaged students through comprehensive counseling, academic tutoring, additional financial aid and various student development activities. The primary purpose of the EOP/AIM Academic Advisor is to provide EOP students with academic, financial, personal and career counseling. The EOP/AIM Academic Advisor assists students with academic planning while ensuring they remain on target to graduate and financial aid qualified.

  The incumbent will manage an advising caseload of approximately 100 EOP/AIM students while guiding them to become well-rounded global citizens. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: assisting students in academic planning related to the students' abilities and interests; ensure students meet guidelines to receive the maximum amount of financial aid they are entitled to; conveying and interpreting the University's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors and courses of study; may work directly with faculty in various schools or departments to enhance the advisement process; may advocate and/or refer students to related offices (Financial Aid Office, Student Accounts, Health & Psychological Services, Career Center, etc.) as appropriate; exposure to experiential service learning & research opportunities; personal and professional development; guide towards leadership and campus involvement activities; personal support and guidance; empowerment to advocate. EOP Pre-Freshman Summer Academy involvement is required and the incumbent will play an intricate role in the student's transition from high school to college involving academic and social development. The incumbent must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.Duties:

  Provide academic advising and counseling (course registration, student record reviews, academic planning, etc.), financial aid counseling, career counseling and personal/developmental counseling to assigned students through individual and

  group counseling, advising and programming. Serve as liaison and advocate for program students within campus and with external

  agencies. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records on all assigned students.Contribute to the development and execution of the EOP/AIM Pre-Freshman Summer Academy.Develop and implement various events and activities that contribute to student

  success.Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.Special Notes:

  This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
