JOB REQUIREMENTS: This position is responsible for welding equipment,parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at ourvast, 63-acre facility. Follows directions under intermittentsupervision. Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits. Recognize, set up,and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such asshielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment. Select andinstall torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to weldingchart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals. Lay out,position, align, and secure parts prior to assembly, usingstraightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers. Examine workpieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges ortemplates to ensure conformance with specifications. Operate manual orsemi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, usingflux-cored arc. Detect faulty operation of equipment or defectivematerials and notify supervisors. Use fire suppression methods inindustrial emergencies. Gouge metals, using the air-arc gouging process.Troubleshoot problems with all equipment as it arises. Ability to keepyour hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your armand hand in one position. Ability to see details at close range (withina few feet of the observer). Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjustthe controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Ability totell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. Ability toimagine how something will look after it is moved around or when itsparts are moved or rearranged. Ability to quickly move your hand, yourhand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, orassemble objects. Ability to use your abdominal and lower back musclesto support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without\'giving out\' or fatiguing. Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds.May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required.Attendance is an essential function of the job.
