About Senior Legal Counsel - Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Enterprise Services & Public Affairs (ESPA) (International)

  The Senior Legal Counsel - Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Enterprise Services & Public Affairs (ESPA) is a senior level position responsible for serving as strategic business partner and subject matter expert by providing Citi businesses and functions with legal counsel and thought leadership on matters related to Citi’s ESPA and ESG activities which have an international focus. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas. Operating as a senior member of the global ESPA and ESG Legal team, this role provides guidance on novel and complex regulatory and legal issues and contributes to the execution of Citi’s ESPA and ESG legal strategy, taking into account business innovation and growth, risk and control considerations, and regulatory compliance in fulfilment of Citi’s mission. This role requires a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws, regulations and legal developments for geographies in which we operate, with a particular focus on the UK and EU.

  Responsibilities:

  Responsible for providing Citi businesses and functions with legal counsel; supporting strategic initiatives and product/service launches, providing subject matter expertise and interpretations of relevant international laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices (particularly UK and EU), and advising business management/leadership on all manner of legal matters related to ESG from an international perspective, as well as various ESPA activities. This includes performing advisory services on legal issues relating to sustainability and the ESG agenda generally, as well as government affairs activities and reputational risk management

  Provide advisory services in respect of ESG related business and risk management decisions by applying institutional knowledge against industry standard, widely accepted business practices, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines; identifying when to escalate where necessary

  Collaborate across internal lines of business and control/support functions to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters related to the areas of focus for the role; coordinate closely with Legal peers aligned to associated businesses, collaborate effectively with expert legal colleagues and lead through influence

  Lead workstreams to analyse key implications of emerging and existing laws that impact the rapidly evolving EU and UK ESG regulatory agenda (including horizon scanning, advocacy and implementation) and assist in the provision of coverage as it relates to other major international jurisdictions (working with local experts). This will include advice in relation to product related developments and product and entity disclosures

  Manage day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert, including coordinating the provision of external legal services

  Actively participate in relevant risk review and control forums while demonstrating keen awareness of issues that could cause financial, reputational, or legal consequences

  Proactively identify, evaluate, and contribute to the appropriate management of legal, regulatory, and reputational risk by collaborating with ICRM & Risk, following relevant legal developments, participating in internal projects, and performing other related tasks

  Key contributor to overall strategy, establishing direction and planning for the needs of the ESPA and ESG Legal team

  Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards

  Qualifications:

  Suitable, relevant legal experience (experience working in an in-house legal role in financial services beneficial)

  Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills

  Experience in working with regulators/regulatory bodies would be beneficial

  Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing multiple assignments simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced environment

  Knowledge and expertise on specific laws, rules and regulations and other legal developments related to financial services (with a UK/EU ESG focus being advantageous) while staying abreast of the changing regulatory and legal environment, internal policies and industry trends that impact the business

  Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships

  Bar license/practicing certificate in good standing to practice law
