JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Under the direction and guidance of the Wildland Coordinator, the Seasonal Firefighter is a Wildland crew member serving under an Engine Boss and will assist the Department in filling resource orders during the Wildfire season. When not on detail, the Seasonal Firefighter will be assigned duties at the station as well as assist locally with fuels mitigation and other projects.
The position is non-benefited and full time, seasonal from April 1 through October 31, with the potential to become a benefited full-time, year round position. The position has assigned shifts and is compensated for overtime on resource order deployments. The seasonal firefighter is expected to work towards becoming a qualified Engine Boss as well as work on other firefighter qualifications.
While this position has Wildland Fire duties, it is an integral part of Moab Valley Fire Department and is part of the larger team. The Seasonal Firefighter is expected to meet all requirements of maintaining membership in the Department. When in District and available, this position will respond to calls to service for the Department.
The Seasonal Firefighter responsibilities may involve performing hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time in cramped surroundings, hot, smoky environments with limited visibility, and at considerable heights.
Out of area travel is required for the seasonal firefighter position. The incumbent is expected to be available for fire assignments throughout the fire season. Fire assignments will typically last 14 days.
CERTIFICATIONS:
The following qualification currency is required:
Type 2 Wildland Firefighter FFT2
If not currently qualified, the incumbent is expected to gain this qualification within 2 weeks of employment.
PARTICIPATES IN ONGOING TRAINING:
Complete training as required to meet Fire Department, State and Federally recognized standards, which may include classroom and practical instruction as well as hands-on evaluations, examinations, and certification. Training includes both structural and Wildland aspects of firefighting. The Seasonal Firefighter must have an understanding of fire service principles and practices and implement those in all aspects of their work.
PHYSICAL TRAINING (PT)
Applicant will pass the following PT test as a condition of hire
· 6 pullups in 1 minute
· 25 pushups in 1 minute
· 25 sit-ups in 1 minute
· Work Capacity Test (3 mile walk on flat ground carrying 45 lbs in under 45 minutes)
Once hired, the incumbent is expected to participate in a daily PT program that will involve a variety of cardiovascular and strength training.
ACTIVELY PARTICIPATES IN FIRE PREVENTION/PREPAREDNESS/PUBLIC EDUCATION/PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIES: Follow District policies and procedures. Represent MVFD with a professional public image both during and after work hours.
Participate in Department activities to educate the public on fire prevention and preparedness.
