The University of Washington’s Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) is considered to be among the top Divisions of General Internal Medicine in the nation. The Division has a workforce of over 550, with 460+ faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care.
The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC-Montlake and Northwest), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and VA Boise, with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle. GIM has faculty in seven academic primary care clinics as well as in neighborhood clinics located across the Puget Sound, and manages inpatients at four Seattle area hospitals.
GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $110m. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.
POSITION PURPOSE The Department of Medicine/Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) has an exciting opportunity for full-time (100% FTE) Senior Research Scientist/Engineer. The purpose of this position is to support multiple NIH-funded projects including, but not limited to, two major, multi-institute projects that are multi-site, interdisciplinary, and large in scale. Two of the main responsibilities of this position will be to (1) serve as technical team lead for the data management core of the 10-site Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) cohort study, and (2) mentor and manage other research scientists and analysts on the team. This position reports to a Research Associate Professor within the Division and works closely with leadership, faculty, and research staff, both within the Division and across other Division (e.g., AID) in the Department of Medicine, in an effort to support and build upon ongoing grant-funded research. The position allows for the development of new scientific areas of research and funding opportunities in the context of furthering the research agenda of the existing research group, as well as the Division Position Complexities:
The position is required to use independent judgment, strong leadership skills, and knowledge of epidemiological methods, data management, and HIV research to effectively facilitate cross-institution research and promote a collaborative, productive work environment. This position will maintain dynamic communication with the Primary Investigator (PI) team of the grants funding the position, faculty and staff across multiple divisions, as well as internal and external partners. This position participates in development of scientific agendas and grant planning
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:The position is devoted to scientific research, specifically in the field of HIV and related comorbidities, with work being funded by grants from multiple NIH institutes including but not limited to NIAID, NIDA, and NHLBI
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Project Management/Coordination (40%)
Serve as the Technical Team Lead for the data management core (DMC) of a national, 10-site cohort study, the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) cohort, with 20 years of ongoing data collection and which provides data to researchers across the country for use in analyses related to people with HIV.
Manage the CNICS DMC data repository and prepare technical reports.
Supervise data audits, data cleaning, and data harmonization for the CNICS DMC.
Develop and format study materials and standard operating procedures.
Project coordination of multi-site research projects of national scope; leads team of multi-site interdisciplinary scientists, data managers, and research coordinators toward project implementation, planning, and manuscript development.
Development of new research instruments for use in the CNICS cohort.
Develop human subjects applications, reports, and renewals.Data Management/Analysis (30%)
Application and adaptation of statistical methods to suit complex data harmonization projects.
Use of longitudinal data analysis techniques to understand trends over time.
Design and perform analyses for numerous manuscripts related to data from the CNICS cohort (e.g., evaluation of the epidemiology of socioeconomic and structural determinants of health among people with HIV related health outcomes).
Harmonization of data from multiple cohort studies across the United States participating in the HIV SUCCESS consortium to understand the overall composition of the substance use epidemic, social and structural determinants of health, and differences among different vulnerable subpopulations among people who use drugs at risk of HIV infection and people living with HIV.
Design and perform analyses for multiple manuscripts related to data from the HIV SUCCESS consortium (e.g., evaluation health outcomes among HIV infected and uninfected study participants).
Statistical analysis of highly complex quantitative data from multiple sources.Mentoring/Supervision (15%)
Supervises interdisciplinary team of research scientists and data managers.
Mentor student/junior staff in statistical methods/analysis.
Leads local site project principal investigators, data managers, and research coordinators toward execution of study objectives.Project Development (10%)
Contribute to development of research objectives/aims.
Identification and pursuit of grant extension, supplements, and novel grant opportunities for research in the HIV and/or substance use field.
Development of research protocols with foresight into implications for future data analysis.General (5%)
Facilitate communication through coordination of project-related meetings and calls Other related duties as required.
Presents papers at national and international conferences MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
PhD in Epidemiology or related plus six years of related experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced expertise of research study design and implementation.
Experience in complex data management structures.
Extensive experience in statistical analysis; familiarity with standard statistical tools and programming language(s).
Experience with interdisciplinary meeting facilitation and consensus-building.
Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills; ability to effectively present complex data to interdisciplinary audiences.
Works independently with little to no oversight required; consults with supervisor/principal investigators for guidance related to overall objectives, significant issues/concerning or unusual problems, new concepts, and policy matter.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively and productively with peers as well as superiors.
Experience with people management.
Effective time management/prioritization.
Strong organizational and documentation skills suitable to complex, inter-institutional data management projects.
Can independently manage individual research projects that they own.
Experience with/willingness to present research findings at research conference.
Willingness to learn/maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to data management and statistical data analysis.
Desire and ability to train/mentor graduate students and/or junior colleagues.
