Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, the psychologist performs direct patient care asa key member of our multidisciplinary reactive and proactiveconsultation-liaison (C-L) behavioral health teams. The psychologistabides by guidelines, expectations, and ethical practices as set by theorganization and accrediting bodies. The psychologist examines and diagnosespatients, provides evidence-based, trauma-informed therapeuticinterventions, develops treatment plans, and assists with dispositionalplanning. The psychologist will have opportunities to be involved in qualityimprovement, data monitoring, and research projects. Essential FunctionsProvide high quality clinical services to individuals currentlyhospitalized, often for co-occurring complex medical and psychiatricconditions, that is diversity-equity-inclusion-informed and trauma-informedas well as developmentally appropriateConduct risk assessments, including safety planning and placing mentalhealth holds as neededFlexibility to meet the fluid demands of the patients, team, and hospitalsystemConsult with providers who are part of the primary treatment team and generaterecommendations, referrals, and case management as neededGenerate documentation of assessment and intervention in the medical record ina timely mannerParticipate in quality improvement projects and academic efforts in researchand professional writingConduct brief diagnostic screening of patients using evidence-basedassessments and screening tools and in-depth diagnostic assessment as neededActively participate in morning team staffing meetings with the C-L teamsParticipate in teaching and didactics as part of the training faculty of theDivision of Psychology for psychology pre-doctoral residents and practicumstudentsMust provide some weekend and holiday coverage
Patient Care
Primary clinical responsibility will be divided during the week between ourreactive C-L Psychiatry service, our proactive behavioral health C-Lservices, and bolstering connections with provider teams in the hospital.When working with the reactive C-L Psychiatry service, the psychologist willsee a mixture of new and follow-up consults for assessment and treatment,providing evidence-based and trauma-informed psychological interventions whichsometimes may be brief, and other times may be with patients who areadmitted to the hospital for prolonged periods of time.
When on our proactive C-L services, the psychologist will proactively screennew admissions to medicine, trauma, surgery, critical care, PM&R,palliative, pediatric, and labor/delivery services for behavioral healthneeds. This will be done through a combination of chart review, speaking toprimary medical teams, and intermittently rounding with tr atment teams. Thepsychologist must have the ability to evaluate and weigh patients' riskfactors and needs and allocate time to those most likely to need psychologicalcare, such as those in critical care settings.
When patients are identified as likely to clinically benefit from behavioralhealth services, the psychologist will determine whether their interventionswill suffice (e.g. initial examination and diagnosis, trauma informedtherapeutic intervention, further assessment if needed, and treatmentplanning) or whether a patient would benefit from a full consultation frompsychiatrists, psychologists, and/or social workers from our reactiveC-L psychiatry service or from our Addiction C-L service.
Overall, the provider in this role must be comfortable working in a dynamicsetting where each day's specific responsibilities may be very different.This requires a broad range of skills that be readily utilized as appropriate.Enjoying adaptability to the ever-evolving needs is necessary for success. Anexpectation for the position is a willingness to work some weekends andholidays so the team may provide patient care 365 days a year.
When seeing patients:Monitors and evaluates the psychiatric condition of each patient and incollaboration with the psychiatrist and other disciplines and standards ofcare, or by applying appropriate protocols, makes decisions regardingtreatment changes. Refers patient to specialized services as needed.
