Job Designation
The Principal Engineer – Friction Materials will play a full and active role in the activities and operations of the Friction Materials team with specific responsibilities for the design, manufacturing, review, analysis and/or characterization of both physical and dynamic properties ofcarbon friction materialsand oxidation protection systems.
Job Core Responsibilities
· Review and analyze data while applying data analysis statistics; including characterizing materials using various techniques such as optical and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) microscopy.
· Participate in conceptualizing, planning and executing carbon R&D both in evolutionary and revolutionary stages of development. Including new products and/or improvements to present products as a company project or for a specific customer. This work is both theoretical and experimental in nature.
· Assess data and provide recommendations and approvals.
· Support new program design teams as required.
· Write material processing documents and maintain current processing documents.
· Participate in customer briefings, design reviews, and demonstrations by providing technical assistance and guidance.
· Routine interface with carbon production in various locations.
· Support or direct university research as needed.
· Lead multiple projects simultaneously.
Job Specifications
Education: Bachelor degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Materials Engineering required. Master degree or PhD preferred.
Years' Experience: 8+ years of relevant experience in tribology, carbon/carbon processing, carbon oxidation protection or field related to aircraft carbon/carbon brake technology desired.
Skills:
· Background in carbon/carbon composites required.
· Understanding of Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) required, high temperature processing and friction wear and tear (tribology) of carbon and carbon oxidation protection systems desired.
· Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project and Visual Basic Programming.
· Good communication skills – ability to communicate opinions, ideas, or facts to others in formal or informal environments.
· Registration as a Chartered Engineer (UK) or Professional Engineer (US) desired.
· Continuous Improvement (CI) training/experience desired.
· Experience with Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and Risk Analysis desired.
· Available to travel as needed (10-15%)
