  Overview

  Saint Joseph Hospital is a 433-bed facility located in Lexington Kentucky. Founded in 1877 a small group of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky led by Sister Euphrasia Stafford began their health ministry. Their mission was to provide compassionate care to the poor and underserved – a tradition still carried out today. Saint Joseph Hospital primarily serves central and eastern Kentucky with a full range of services including distinguished awards for cardiology orthopedics and stroke care.   Responsibilities

  Job Summary / Job Purpose

  Performs the manual technical tasks involved with the proper storage, distribution, packaging and

  labeling of drugs, associated record keeping and patient charging systems. Works under the supervision

  of a Registered Pharmacist. Follows proper procedures for the operation of equipment and use of

  supplies. Maintains and coordinates systems to ensure that pharmacy operations run efficiently on a

  day-to-day basis. Maintains and trouble-shoots Pyxis dispensing system. Responsible for centralized

  compounding work using safe IV room practices, large volume end-product batching (IVPB, syringes,

  etc.), compounding total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN), and end-

  product quality assurance. Responsible for orientation and training of new technicians, daily work

  assignments and scheduling, and adjustment of staffing to ensure smooth operation and appropriate

  staffing.

  Essential Functions

  Monitors work performed and services provided by the Pharmacy to aid the pharmacist inorganizing work efforts to maximize efficiency and productivity.

  Assists in the orientation and training of new pharmacy technicians as assigned by pharmacysupervisory staff.

  Identifies and notifies manager of any subordinate whose performance is below standards or whois in violation of hospital/departmental policy.

  Performs routine non-technical maintenance and cleaning of all pharmacy computer systems.Assists the pharmacist in communicating with affiliated computer companies and implements

  activities dictated by these communications.

  Assists pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care to include (but not limited to):a. Preparing, filling and distributing medication

  b. Screening phone calls/orders and alerting the pharmacist to patient-specific data

  Pre-packages tablets, capsules and liquids into single-dose units. Prepares labels withmedication name, strength, lot number and expiration date.

  Obtains narcotics from Pyxis vault. Prepares narcotics for rounds and files required paperwork.Participates daily in narcotic audits on the units.

  Oversees and troubleshoots Pyxis consolea. Communicates changes to pharmacy staff

  b. Serves as liaison between Pyxis and Pharmacy

  c. Manages Pyxis security, adding and deleting users

  d. Trains staff on system changes and upgrades

  e. Notifies vendor/CHI of system problems

  Maintains adequate levels of stock drugs in Pyxis dispensing system on nursing units

  Repackages and labels bulk oral solid and liquid drugs into unit-dose form under pharmacist

  supervision. Reconstitutes drugs and prepares compounds under pharmacist supervision.

  Delivers medications, IV’s and controlled substances on a daily basis to replenish inventorylevels. Requires interpretation and judgment to assure accurate and practical inventory levels.

  Completes charges/credits daily for billing.

  Checks and restocks patient care and special care stock supplies (i.e. emergency drugs to crash carts and heart carts) under pharmacist supervision.

  Performs duties in documented accordance with requirements of all regulatory and governing bodies. 15. Safe handling/disposal / packaging for Transport of Pharmaceutical Waste/ Hazardous Materials/Bio- Hazardous Regulated Medical Waste. 1) Completes the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) and Hazardous Waste education during employee orientation. 2) Tri –annually education for the D.O.T training. 3) is knowledgeable of the process for identifying the proper waste stream and uses the appropriate container to dispose of waste. 4) Knowledgeable regarding the process to contact the emergency response coordinator for hazardous waste/pharmaceutical release/spill clean-up.

  Other Duties as assigned

  Qualifications

  Job Requirements / Qualifications

  Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

  High school/GED

  Registered as pharmacy technician with the State Board of Pharmacy Examiners.

  PTCB national certification required. Certification not required for second year pharmacy students

  and/or licensed pharmacy interns.

  Experience (required and preferred):

  Three years pharmacy tech experience preferredPay Range

  $20.62 - $28.35 /hour
