About Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Ocular Oncology

As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans (https://jobs.mayoclinic.org/benefits/) – to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic. You’ll thrive in an environment that supports innovation, is committed to ending racism and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion, and provides the resources you need to succeed.

  Responsibilities

Ophthalmology is looking to hire a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) into the Ocular Oncology practice, with particular focus on melanoma.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be an integral part of the Ophthalmology practice, seeing adult patients with ocular tumors as a partner to Dr. Dalvin.

  Key job expectations:

NP PA would play a central role in surveillance of treated ocular cancers and screening for development of metastatic disease following screening protocols based on tumor prognostic tests results or tumor size when prognostic tests are not available.

NP PA will play a role in work up of suspected metastatic disease and facilitate referral to medical oncology if biopsy-proven metastasis. This role will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Medical Oncology Melanoma and cutaneous malignancies care team.

NPPA will facilitate screening, referrals, or additional workup required for incidental systemic findings found on surveillance imaging.

  Help with Inbasket coverage.

A desire to develop caring and lasting relationships with patients is appreciated.

Future directions: There is potential for this scope to expand in the following:

  Facilitate adjuvant clinical trials.

Ocular toxicity screening for cancer therapies as part of clinical trial protocols and emerging cancer therapies with a high risk of eye toxicity.

See patients with low to medium-risk nevus, building individual confidence in eye exam skills in combination with photo follow up.

Help with clinic visits for sebaceous carcinoma patients who are on a every 3 month map biopsy protocol.

NP PA can help with clinic visits for BAP1 and MBD4 screening (patients at increased risk for uveal melanoma who require annual exam but usually have no ocular pathology).

NP PA can help with CNS lymphoma patient screening as part of initial staging procedures.

NPs and PAs are a new role to the Ophthalmology division. As such there will be an opportunity to further develop the NP PA role and scope in the division in collaboration with Dr. Dalvin and leadership. The person who takes this position will need to have a strong desire for learning, ability to navigate growth opportunities, and interest in both ophthalmology and cancer care. There will be 1:1 mentorship from Dr. Dalvin for the individual to grow in this unique practice.

The ideal NP PA candidate requires a commitment to challenging and complex patients, excellent communication and assessment skills.

Once established clinically, the division and Dr. Dalvin are very supportive of mentoring NP PAs in other academic, research, and leadership pursuits. We strive to see our Advanced Practice Providers excel in clinical practice, research, and education shields.

Current Minnesota RN license and certification, or eligible to be certified, as an ANP, ACNP, or FNP or graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by the NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice. The NP/PA must be eligible for DEA registration.
