  National Park Service Planning Fellow

  Position Details

  Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

  The National Parks Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources of the National Parks System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Planning and Special Studies (PPSS) Division in the national office provides overall direction, funding, and policy development, for park planning across the National Park Service.

  The fellow(s), with the support of PPSS staff, will analyze completed planning documents and survey and interview park and regional staff to 1) determine if facility investments identified in the plans have been implemented; 2) understand the impact those investments have on park funding and staffing capacity; and 3) make recommendations to update planning policy and guidance to promote park financial and operational sustainability.

  Position Responsibilities:

  Review a sample of past planning documents.

  Conduct surveys and interviews with staff and leaders from multiple disciplines across the agency.

  Identify which plans or elements of plans were implemented, and of those, which improved park financial and operational sustainability.

  Recommend updates to planning policy and guidance.

  Present findings/recommendations to senior leadership.

  Minimum Requirements:

  Ages 18-30 (up to 35 with veteran status documentation)

  Responsibility and time management skills

  Very strong communication and organizational skills

  Flexible work style and ability to work independently and on a team

  Ability to pass a federal background check

  Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship, with an anticipated graduation date after the internship end date.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as Urban and Recreational Planning, Business Administration, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Public Policy, and related fields.

  Previous planning experience or coursework/general familiarity with planning.

  Benefits:

  $600/wk living stipend + $300/wk housing (negotiable) equivalent to $22.5-$26/hr (pre-tax)

  Segal Education Award upon completion of required hours: $1,956.35

  Upon graduation, planning fellows who successfully complete their internship are eligible for non-competitive hiring into the NPS.
