The Grossing Technician plays a critical role in the laboratory's specimen processing and examination procedures. Working under the supervision of pathologists and laboratory management, the Grossing Technician is responsible for accurately and meticulously performing gross examination of surgical specimens. This involves assessing the macroscopic features, dimensions, and identifying abnormalities of the specimens.
Primary Responsibilities:
Performs Gross Examination: Conducts accurate gross examination of surgical specimens, including observing and describing macroscopic features, dimensions, and identifying abnormalities
Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and instruments used in grossing and tissue processing
Recordkeeping: Maintains detailed records of accessioning, labeling, and tracking specimens for accurate documentation and traceability
Compliance with SOPs and Safety Protocols: Adheres to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols for a clean and organized work environment and safe handling of hazardous materials
Collaboration: Works closely with pathologists, histotechnologists, and laboratory personnel for a smooth workflow and accurate specimen analysis
Quality Control and Assurance: Participates in quality control and assurance programs, promptly reporting any issues or discrepancies
Training and Orientation: Assists in training and orienting new staff members, ensuring adherence to CAP guidelines, laboratory protocols, and safety procedures
Professional Development: Stays updated with advancements in pathology techniques through workshops, conferences, and continuing education programs
Adherence to CAP Guidelines: Maintains knowledge of and comply with CAP guidelines for specimen handling, processing, and documentation
Ethical Standards and Patient Confidentiality: Upholds ethical standards, ensuring patient confidentiality and data privacy

Required Qualifications:
1+ years of experience performing gross dissection and dictation of surgical biopsy specimens
Proficiency in specimen processing techniques, such as embedding, sectioning, and slide preparation for efficient and accurate sample analysis
Proven attention to detail and precision in labeling, tracking, and documentation of specimens
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, anatomy, pathology, or a related discipline can provide a solid foundation of knowledge and skills necessary for the role
Pathologist’s Assistant or Histotechnician /Histotechnologist (American Society for Clinical Pathology)or other national accrediting agency
1+ years as a Pathologist’s Assistant
Solid understanding of anatomy and pathology to accurately identify and describe macroscopic features and abnormalities in surgical specimens
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures related to specimen processing, including embedding, sectioning, and slide mounting
Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments used in grossing and tissue processing
Well-versed in standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols for specimen handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), and the safe management of hazardous materials
Proficiency in using gross photography techniques to document specimens accurately
Demonstrate excellent gross examination skills to accurately assess and describe the macroscopic features of specimens
Proven solid organizational skills to effectively manage a high volume of specimens while maintaining accurate records
Proven troubleshooting skills to address specimen processing issues and resolve them efficiently
Provenability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory environment
Demonstrated capability of following instructions, SOPs, and safety protocols meticulously to ensure compliance and accurate results
Proven solid communication skills are essential for collaboration with pathologists, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals
Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Proven commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards in pathology
Proven ability to stay updated with advancements in pathology techniques and CAP guidelines through continuous learning and professional development opportunities
Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
Physical Demands:
Working as a Grossing Technician involves various physical demands. These may include manual dexterity, as the role requires manipulating small instruments, handling delicate specimens, and performing precise tasks that require fine motor skills. The job also entails standing for extended periods and moving around the laboratory to perform tasks efficiently. There may be occasional lifting up to 50 lbs and carrying of heavy specimen containers or equipment, requiring physical strength and proper body mechanics. Good visual acuity is necessary to accurately observe and identify macroscopic features and abnormalities in specimens. Additionally, the role demands physical stamina to handle a fast-paced, high-volume work environment and perform repetitive tasks throughout the day.

Washington Residents Only: The hourly range for Washington residents is $23.22 to $45.43 per hour.
