About Energy Analyst

  We are seeking an Energy Analyst (EA) who will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing all energy related functions in the buildings and utility plants at the Homewood Campus, Wyman Park Facility, and at several off-campus sites. Analyses include developing and implementing energy conservation measures designed to reduce the consumption of electricity, fuel, and water, and monitoring the fuel and electric commodity markets for purchasing futures contracts to serve the University’s annual energy requirements. The EA is also responsible for maintaining the Campus metering systems. This position reports to the Associate Director of Energy and Engineering.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  Monitors and analyzes energy consumption and costs in the buildings and utility plants at the Homewood Campus, Wyman Park Facility, and several off-campus sites.

  Participates in the budget development process by forecasting annual energy and water costs for the Homewood Campus, Wyman Park Complex, and several off-campus sites.

  Maintains campus-metering systems for electricity, steam, natural gas, and water; includes soliciting and managing service contracts, and the oversight of meter purchases and installations.

  Manages utility load reduction and rebate programs for the Homewood Campus.

  Assists Director of Plant Operations in the negotiation and procurement of energy to include the analysis of short- and long-term electricity and fuel futures contracts; fuel purchase contracts total over 12 million dollars annually.

  Monitors commodities market for potential fuel switching opportunities that provide lower unit costs.

  Acts as liaison for utility issues with the local utility and the Campus customers.

  Develops statistical reports that are designed to compare energy usage and operational costs between buildings, help forecast budget requirements, and emphasize areas representing potential energy conservation opportunities.

  Develops energy usage profiles, specifically electricity and fuel use at the Homewood Campus and Wyman Park Facility for the purpose of recommending potential cost savings strategies.

  Prepares and distributes energy use and cost reports that are used to support the University’s efforts in negotiating federal indirect cost recovery rates. This includes creating and maintaining computer programs used to record the amounts of utilities consumed in sponsored research buildings.

  Manages departmental utility consumption programs that are used for billing customers connected to the Homewood service loops (i.e. Space Telescope Institute, BMA, Credit Union, and Homewood House Museum. This includes generating monthly bills.

  Communicates with vendors, contractors and state and local government agencies, MDE and the PSC.

  Works with building occupants and the HVAC Shop to develop building operating schedules designed to reduce energy consumption.

  Assists the Director of Plant Operations with special projects as requested.

  Decision Making

  Carries out duties and responsibilities with minimal to no supervision.

  Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations.

  Authority

  Incumbent does not direct the activities of staff.Communication

  Incumbent must be computer literate and able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical manuals.

  Strong written and oral communication skills.

  Physical Requirements

  Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.

  Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

  Communication skills using the spoken word.

  Ability to see within normal parameters.

  Ability to hear within normal range.

  Ability to move about.

  Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.

  Minimum Qualifications

  BS in an Engineering field or the technical equivalent required; extensive job-related experience may be substituted for education.

  A minimum of 5 years' experience in energy management field with progressively increasing responsibilities is required.

  Operational understanding of Utility Plants and HVAC systems.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is preferred.Classified Title: Energy Analyst

  Starting Salary Range: Min $53,300 - Max $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
