  WHO WE ARE

At the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) our work is about protecting Michigan’s environment and that work spans research, monitoring, regulation, education, and community engagement. We are equally passionate about creating a positive, professional, and supportive work environment where we value our differences and are committed to being open and respectful of all our employees and the public we serve.

We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.

Under these programs, EGLE staff work closely with local health departments who implement permitting and inspection programs for their areas.

  The chosen intern will:

Experience travel with EGLE staff and shadow various activities including:

Evaluation of local health department’s programs

Observe field visits to inspect newly installed wells and office permit reviews

Review files with staff to learn about permits, the process and items to look for that may require correction

Review construction permits application materials and engineered plans

Participate in consultations or compliance inspections with local health department staff
