General Summary
The Database and Applications Specialist is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of database systems within Sunrock. This role involves ensuring the efficient and secure management of data, as well as collaborating with internal teams to optimize database performance and meet business requirements. This role also involves report management and some simple report development as needed. As a part of Sunrock’s Information Technology team, this individual will strive to provide the best support, security, and deliverables possible.
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of database architecture and administration. While this candidate is expected to work independently, they will also have a critical role within specific project teams. This individual will operate within division or department policy guidelines using independent judgment in achieving assigned objectives. Practicing absolute confidentiality, good judgment and common sense is required in all duties and any other task assigned. Typical works hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM, though some after-hours work is possible in order to support operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design and implement database solutions that align with organizational needs and industry best practices
Develop and maintain database models, schemas, and data dictionaries
Optimize database performance by monitoring and tuning system parameters, query optimization, and index management
Manage the existing reporting solutions as well as provide new efficient options for our users
Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with relevant data protection regulations
Perform regular database backups, disaster recovery planning, and testing
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, such as performance bottlenecks and data corruption
Plan and implement database upgrades, patches, and migrations
Develop and maintain documentation related to database architecture, configuration, and procedures
Stay up to date with emerging database technologies and trends, and make recommendations for their adoption when appropriate
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement data governance and data management strategies
Participate in capacity planning and resource allocation for database systems.
Collaborate with vendors and external partners to evaluate and implement third-party database tools and solutions
Ensure high availability and data redundancy through the implementation of appropriate database replication and clustering strategies
Collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders to understand and translate business requirements into database designs and structures
Collaborate with project teams members to integrate applications with databases
Work with the Information Technology Team to help solve technical problems companywide in a timely manner
Administer the records retention and destruction procedures as instructed
Build and maintain strong communications and relationships with coworkers and vendors
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or IT related field preferred.Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as Database and Applications Specialist or similar role. Substantial knowledge of database management systems, such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL.
Required Skills
Proven experience as a Database and Applications Specialist with strong knowledge of database management systems, such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL
Proficiency in database design principles, normalization techniques, and data modeling
Expertise in SQL programming and query optimization
Familiarity with database security and access control principles
Experience with database administration tools and monitoring systems
Knowledge of data replication, clustering, and high-availability strategies
Understanding of data governance and data management principles
Familiarity with cloud-based database technologies, such as Amazon RDS or Azure SQL Database
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong communication abilities and a desire to collaborate
Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
Detail-oriented and committed to delivering high-quality results
Willingness to stay updated with emerging database technologies and industry trends
