If you answered yes to those questions, we want to meet you!
We are looking for the right person to join our dynamic team of staff preparing delicious and nutritious meals for our institutional population and and employees at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
A temporary cook with the Nevada County Sheriff's office is a valuable part of our team, they not only prepare meals, but help coach and mentor our customers. The Cook works under general supervision to help with the planning, preparing, and supervising of meals served at our facility.
This position requires a candidate who is interested in working in a correctional facility setting and is passionate about making a difference in the lives of those we serve. The ideal candidate should posses an excitement and passion for cooking while showcasing an understanding of safe food handling practices.

The Cook, once hired, is placed through a hands-on training and mentoring period to provide you with the technical skills and clarity needed to be successful in our organization. We prepare our Cooks to be extraordinary mentors so that they can provide opportunities to customers by helping them build skills they need to secure employment stability after their stay.
Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade and one year of experience cooking food in large quantities in an institutional, correctional or commercial setting.
This position is classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to pre-hire drug and alcohol screening and a comprehensive background investigation.

Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of:
Techniques and methods for preparing food in quantities including meal planning and portion control
Equipment and utensils used in the preparation, cooking and serving of food
Safe food storage methods
Kitchen sanitation and methods of cleaning and caring for kitchen equipment, and laws and regulations pertaining to same
Kitchen safety practices
Basic principles of training and supervision
Basic record keeping
Skill in:
Directing the work of inmates/recovery clients/juveniles engaged in food preparation and kitchen sanitation
Ordering food and supplies in proper quantities
Preparing designated quantities of food with a minimum of waste
Organizing work to meet meal schedules
Supervising kitchen activity while maintaining necessary paperwork/records in handwritten and typewritten form
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ability to give clear and concise verbal instructions
Education and Experience Required
Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade and one year of experience cooking food in large quantities in an institutional, correctional or commercial setting.
Must obtain certification for CPR and First Aid by the American Red Cross within 90 days of employment.
Willingness and ability to work shifts and holidays.
County Correctional Facility:
Applicants must be able to work in a confined, high security facility with convicted prisoners. Ability to work with, train and closely supervise inmate workers. Must submit to and pass a psychological evaluation, medical examination, background investigation, and a medical food handling clearance.

Nevada County employees can opt to receive dental and vision insurance without opting for health insurance coverage as well. Retirement
The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.
