As a second line of defence role, the Risk Manager, Nuveen International will be responsible for Risk Management activities for Nuveen Asset Management Europe Sarl (NAME - hereafter “the PSF”) in Luxembourg and NAME branches in Germany, Holland, Sweden, Italy and Denmark. They will also serve as the Conducting Office for Risk for the PSF. They will also support and assist both the Head of Operational Risk, Nuveen Europe & APAC in developing and providing Risk oversight, together with the related execution of Risk programs in support of the Nuveen Europe & APAC business and the overall Nuveen Operational Risk function. They will also work alongside the Conducting Office for Nuveen Alternatives Europe Sarl (NAE) and assist in providing Risk oversight within Luxembourg.
As a second line of defence the role has responsibility for overseeing Risk management in Europe for the PSF. The role-holder will lead the Risk function across Nuveen’s European and APAC business and act as subject matter expert for the PSF, its senior leadership and governance committees.
The successful candidate will be play a key role in developing the strategy and delivery of the risk framework, focusing on Operational risk to ensure that risks are identified, assessed and managed effectively; The successful candidate with have demonstrable experience of promoting and improving efficiencies to reduce the risk of loss, ensuring compliance with corporate policies, procedures, governance and regulatory requirements.
The Nuveen Operational Risk function provides independent oversight of the full spectrum of risks across all functions within the business, providing clear and comprehensive risk analysis and reporting to the PSF Board and associated oversight bodies.
This is a key hire and requires the candidate to engage with directors, key business stakeholders and international colleagues, including our functional Risk partners in the U.S. The ability to engage and deliver on key risk initiatives is critically important.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the appointed Risk Manager and Conducting Office for Risk for NAME;
Participate in relevant group committees that support the activities of THE PSF and enable effective risk oversight by the Risk Manager;
Develop, manage and maintain an appropriate and consistent 2nd line Operational Risk oversight framework for THE PSF, incorporating risk appetite, policies, procedures and reporting and issue escalation protocols to support local, regional and global governance needs;
Enhance the existing framework to further identify, assess and monitor the operational risks faced relative to processes, systems, people, and external risks arising from Nuveen’s businesses and affiliates.
Establish and oversee the application of operational risk policies, technology and tools, and governance processes to create lasting solutions for minimizing losses from internal processes, inadequate controls, and emerging risks.
Provide robust risk oversight and challenge to the functions responsible for managing operational risks, making pragmatic recommendations for improvements in the control environment where necessary.
Maintain ongoing monitoring of the key current and emerging operational risks
Assists in assessing current status of regulatory related controls in relation to business processes and recommend control enhancements as neededEstablishes and maintains a robust control environment and culture within the PSF and its branches.
Support / lead strategic and thematic reviews of key risk areas, reporting conclusions to the senior management where required. Support response to regulatory engagement on operational risks, including those in relation to overall market resilience.
Working with executive management, ensure the operational resilience remains within the risk profile of our Leadership teams and fit for purpose to deliver our core investment services and regulatory responsibilities within Nuveen
Represent Operational Risk in applicable Europe/APAC governance committees and provide the necessary line of sight for TIAA and Nuveen Risk in Europe;
Attend and actively participate in relevant management and risk governance forums and project meetings Risk Management
Develops and maintains tracking metrics for management reporting and escalationDevelops a broad and detailed understanding of the organization’s landscape, culture, and technology
Maintain the Risk Management Framework and Policies for THE PSF, including carrying out annual reviews to ensure they remain fit for purpose and monitoring ongoing compliance with the parameters of the Framework and Policy;
Undertake regular risk and control self assessments and reviews in appropriate areas of the business, either in a standalone capacity or working alongside Internal Audit and/or Compliance;
Manage the operational risk issue and incident management process for the PSF, including major incidents, ensuring that all identified incidents and risks are captured, have appropriate mitigating actions agreed with the business and such actions are implemented to prevent reoccurrence;
Preparation of Risk Reports for the PSF Board and to meet the needs of the broader Nuveen Risk group;
Facilitate the embedding of a culture of risk management by actively cultivating and maintaining key relationships, providing advice and support on risk management issues and demonstrating to Management the benefits to be derived from such a culture;
To provide support in the measurement, evaluation and reporting of risk across all areas of the NAME business and provide clear risk information to the Head of Operational Risk, thereby contributing to reporting to senior management and oversight bodies;
Contribute to the maintenance of Nuveen Europe & APAC’s Business Continuity management framework and procedures, including scenario development and testing;
Act as the Risk point of contact for the PSF with the Luxembourg Regulator (CSSF) and be responsible for the preparation and despatch of all required risk related reports to the CSSF to include prudential oversight and reporting;
Liaise with Nuveen European offices and Branches of NAME to ensure they are aware of developments in risk-related policies and other relevant matters and receive their feedback on risk matters in their jurisdiction.
Technical Skills & Qualifications Required
5+ years’ experience in financial services of which majority spent in an operational risk or risk related function;
Strong understanding of the processes and best practices in Financial services and/or Investment Management to include advisory activity
Strong relationship building attributes based around mutual respect and the strength of character to be able to present risk management issues assertively but constructively;
The ability to act under their own initiative and be able to influence a variety of stakeholders, including senior management, in order to achieve their objectives;
Strong communication, reporting and presentation skills;
A focus on delivery and the ability to work to tight deadlines; and
A strong problem solving/analytical mind-set.
