The Autism Professional Learning and Universal Supports (A+) Project atIllinois State University assists the Illinois State Board of Educationin addressing the significant behavior needs of children and youth withAutism Spectrum (ASD) and related behavior and communication disorders.Through a comprehensive approach encompassing professional learning,technical assistance, coaching, and collaboration, A+ has worked closelywith school teams to enhance their capacity to effectively supportstudents with ASD. A+ partners with school entities to:
Provide tiered- level of supports to address the specific needs of eachschool entity. This approach ensures that schools receive theappropriate level of support to improve services and outcomes forstudents with autism.
Promote proactive approaches while working with students with autismspectrum disorder (ASD) to reduce the use of time out and restraint inIllinois schools.
Build local capacity to increase program quality and enhance thefidelity of implementation of evidence-based practices for children andyouth with ASD.
Increase the percentage of students (that qualify for services under theeligibility of autism) who are educated in the general educationclassroom.
Increase meaningful involvement of families in their childrenseducation.
The autism coach position aims to fulfill the commitments of the AutismProfessional Learning and Universal Supports project to participatingschool teams. The Autism Coaching Specialist will deliver professionallearning, workshops and consultation to educators and staff servingstudents with autism in Illinois schools. These services will includeworkshops, the creation of resources and visual supports, andside-by-side coaching of classroom staff. Professional learning includesin person and virtual training to expand the expectations, knowledge,and skills of those who live with, educate, and support individuals withASD. It supports the sustainable implementation of research-basedpractices by providing instructional activities and resources to anyonewho wants to learn more about ASD and to leaders who guide professionaldevelopment initiatives in the school and community settings. Technicalassistance includes facilitating, implementing, and evaluatingsystems-change initiatives customized to the unique needs of schoolteams and educational environments. The autism coach supports thesustainable implementation of research-based practices by providing teamfacilitation and strategic planning to build the capacity of those whosupport individuals with ASD. The autism coach specialist utilizes abehavior skills training model involving instruction, modeling,rehearsal, and feedback; gradual release models to grow the skills staffneed and ensure competency and consistency in implementation.

Illinois State University is authorized to do business within the Stateof Illinois. All work under this appointment is required to be performedfrom within the State of Illinois. Illinois State University does notauthorize out-of-state work.
This is a non-continuous, grant funded position. The initial appointmentwill end on June 30, 2024, the end of the current grant year.Appointment renewal for the following grant year will be based uponavailable grant funding and performance.
This position is located in and works primarily in Northern Illinois.
Salary Rate / Pay Rate
Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience, combined with anexcellent benefits package
Work Hours
Generally Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with occasional weekend andevening hours as business needs dictate
Functional Expectations
Must be able to complete the following with or without a rea onableaccommodation:
1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods
2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed tocomplete day-to-day work
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
