Deckhands work as a crewmember on a tow boat performing necessary tasks to make tow, drops, spot and switch barges. Deckhands must perform their duties with little supervision but must follow the directions of the boat pilot and manager. Deckhands are also required to perform/assist in general maintenance of the vessel (Housekeeping, painting, greasing, servicing vessel engines, etc.) Other duties can be assigned per management.
Requirements:
1+ years of deckhand or river work experience
Ability to make tow, drops, spot, and switch barges
Good communication skills (via marine radio/hand signals)
Ability to judge distances with sight alone
Ability to lift, carry, lay, and work rigging
Understand the different types of lines and their applications
Ability to splice lines and tie off barges
Ability to lift, carry, and operate water pumps
Ability to work in all weather conditions
Ability to inspect lines and vessel equipment and identify hazards
High School Diploma or GED
