About Tenured or Tenure-Track Engineering Education Faculty in Chemical and Biomolecul

Tenured or Tenure-Track Engineering Education Faculty in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Systems Engineering

The ROBERT F. SMITH SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL AND BIOMOLECULAR ENGINEERING (CBE) AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING PROGRAM (SYSEN) AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY, Ithaca, New York invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track engineering education research faculty position (assistant, associate, or full professor) in chemical and biomolecular engineering, who will have a joint teaching and service role in CBE and SYSEN and a tenure home in CBE.

CBE emphasizes fundamental learning and research in chemical, biochemical, and biomolecular processes; and engineering education. Our mission is to prepare students for life-long achievement through education in the principles of chemical engineering and the development of communication, teamwork, and leadership skills so that they may apply these principles and skills to meet societal needs through diverse career paths found at the frontiers of research, education, and industrial development. Research in CBE is particularly strong and active in scalable sustainable energy technologies; functional soft matter and complex fluids; biomolecular engineering and manufacturing; computational process and product design and statistical mechanics; and engineering education. CBE has a strong connection to the System Engineering Program within the College of Engineering, with joint teaching and research between our units, faculty, and students.

The SYSEN Program builds upon the broad expertise of Cornell faculty. It offers unique transdisciplinary master's and doctoral education to prepare systems engineering leaders engaged in complex engineering, socio-technical, and policy challenges. The program attracts students from a variety of disciplines, companies, and countries. Thanks to the remarkable recognition it has earned from both novel industry collaborations and honors from professional societies, the Cornell Systems Program is undergoing a period of significant growth. Research and education areas include Systems analytics and quantitative methods (e.g., mathematical modeling, computational simulation, risk analysis and management, statistics and probability, data science, etc.), Computational model-based systems engineering and optimization, Cyber-physical systems, Systems of systems, and Human-systems interaction modeling and analysis. The faculty hired into this position is expected to contribute to our educational mission by teaching and advising graduate-level systems projects. The faculty will be welcome to play a central role to the development of the SYSEN program and will be involved in strategic decisions and operational needs of the program.

Required qualifications include graduate-level preparation in chemical and biomolecular engineering, systems engineering, STEM education, or related area and the capability of teaching courses in the two units. Responsibilities include the pursuit of a program of externally funded, nationally recognized research in engineering education; with a focus on teaching courses in chemical engineering and systems engineering; and advising undergraduate and graduate students. In 1868, Ezra Cornell wrote, "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." To continue to meet our educational, research, and service goals and to meet our commitment to our founding principle, we are seeking faculty members who share our historical commitment to pursuing knowledge for "...any person ...in any study." Senior candidates with exceptional accomplishments in engineering education research, teaching, and graduate student mentorship are encouraged to apply. Junior candidates must show outstanding research and potential for excellence in teaching and graduate student mentorship. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) is an exciting, emerging research field on Cornell's campus. The faculty member hired through this search will join a community that includes two engineering education research faculty and a larger community of DBER researchers across the university. There is a broad culture of education research and investment throughout the campus, and educational verve is one of President Pollack's key priorities for the University. Discipline-based education researchers on campus also collaborate with the Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute, the Center for Teaching Innovation, and the Active Learning Initiative. This community is filled with disciplinary experts who are passionate about their teaching, engaging in education research literature, and keen to discuss how to improve teaching and learning for students throughout multiple disciplines.
