Responsibilities Duties of the Telephone Operator include, but are not limited to the following: Operates agency telephone Systems to receive and connect incoming and outgoing calls. Interviews incoming caller to determine the proper routing of the call. Routes calls to their proper destination and provides telephone and organizational information to callers. Operates the installation paging system, which includes messages, physician paging, code blue, emergency response for local or national conditions, and notifications. Regularly handles a variety of difficult calls, requiring personal involvement on the part of the incumbent, such as, threatening, abusive, or distraught callers. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/29/2024. General Experience: Responsible for clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Examples: serving as a receptionist or any kind of work that involved frequent telephone contacts. OR, Substitution of Education for Experience (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two (2) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR, Combination of Education and Experience (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Do you possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and general experience directly related to the work of the Telephone Operator position, which may be substituted to meet the experience requirements for this position? You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Clerical Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Decision Making Organizational Awareness Technical Competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is mainly sedentary in nature but requires a high degree of concentration and the ability to work under pressure and stress within specified time frames.
