Purpose of Job This position is responsible for providing surgical patient care and related services in the operating room under the supervision of the RN circulator to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment. Job Functions Assesses surgical procedures and patient specific requirements with the circulating nurse to ensure proper preparation of the operating room. Prepares and maintains the sterile operating field for the duration of each surgical procedure. Assists the surgeon as needed during the intra-operative procedure. Assists with room turnover in O.R. suites between cases. Performs accurate instrument, sponge, needle, and blade count. Assists a wide variety of surgeries including general, urology, ob/gyn, eye, plastic, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and nose and throat. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education/Work Experience Graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program ORGraduate of an accredited school of practical nursing. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Knowledge of sterile technique and handling of sterile equipment Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above Preparation and maintenance of a sterile field Ability to work autonomously and as a team Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress and fact paced environment Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above License/Certification Surgical Technician Certification (obtained within six months of hire) (grandfathered if hired prior to 4/2015) ORCurrent Practical Nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process.
