JOB REQUIREMENTS: Overview Assists surgical team before, during, andafter surgery by performing the following duties. Other duties may beassigned. Responsibilities Places equipment and supplies in operatingroom and arranges instruments, according to instructions. Assists teammembers to place and position patient on table. Scrubs arms and handsand dons gown and gloves. Maintains supply of fluids, such as plasma,saline, blood, and glucose for use during operation. Hands instrumentsand supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performsother tasks as directed by surgeon during operation. Puts dressings onpatient following surgery. Counts sponges, needles, and instrumentsbefore and after operation. Washes and sterilizes equipment. Cleansoperating room. The surgical assistant facilitates the safe positioningof the patient according to the surgeon\'s preference, patient\'sanatomical and physiological limits and surgical procedure to beperformed. A preoperative introduction visit may be done to assess thesurgical site to better aid in positioning. Assists circulator andanesthesia provider in preparation of the patient of the patient. Thesurgical assistant performs specific tasks according to individualsurgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques including, but notlimited to incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providingexposure, achieving hemostasis by means of injection, manual and topicalmethods, and application of appropriate energy sources, manipulation anddissection/removal of tissues, aides in implanting, securing and /orremoval of devices and drains, and applying appropriate dressingmaterial specific to procedure. The surgical assistant applies any otherspecific dressing material such as splints or casts, assess skinintegrity, assists in transfer of the patient, and follow the patient torecovery if needed or directly by the surgeon. The surgical assistantwho has appropriate training also performs under surgeon supervisionother procedures including but not limited to: vein and graftharvesting, graft and implant preparation, assist in robotic proceduresafter education has been accomplished in these areas. The surgicalassistant performs additional duties as delegated by the surgeon incooperation with state and local policy. The coordinator will assist thedirector in training and scheduling for other surgical assistants tocover staffing and on call needs.
