Responsibilities As a Supervisory Attorney-Advisor with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor, Division of Indian Affairs, Branch of Self-Governance and Economic Development (SGED) located in Washington, DC your specific duties will include: Serving as first-line supervisor of attorneys assigned to the Branch. Supervisory functions will include: setting goals and deadlines; planning and making assignments; reviewing, revising, and approving attorney work, as necessary; evaluating attorney performance and assigning ratings; recommending actions on such as hiring, promotions, training, etc.; counseling employees on conduct and performance issues, and initiating corrective actions when needed; and approving leave. Acting as the principal attorney for the bureaus and areas of law assigned to the Branch. Incumbent advises executive-level management and office supervisors within this assigned area of responsibility, including gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, contracting and compacting under the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act, Tribal transportation and roads, Tribal and Federal law enforcement, Tribal courts, detention, victim services, loan guarantee program, and economic development, reviews and prepares legal opinions, reviews client documents, assists the Department of Justice in all aspects of litigation in assigned areas and advises on questions of law or administrative policy. Working on complex legal and/or factual issues leading to or requiring intricate resolutions, often under litigation and other deadlines. Due to the extraordinarily complicated nature of many of these issues and different stakeholders, incumbent consults with affected interests within the Office of the Solicitor, other offices within the Department of the Interior, other Federal agencies, and Indian tribes. Salary Information: First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level. GS-15 (Step 1 $155,700 to Step 10 $183,500) per annum. Qualifications Basic Qualification Requirements Applicants must be law school graduates with LL.B. or J.D. degrees AND must be an active member in good standing of a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico bar. To qualify for a GS-15 applicants must possess at least 6-years of professional legal experience following law school graduation; For any of the grades indicated above you can substitute one year of experience with any of the following: have a second professional law degree; OR meet any of the criteria indicated below: academic standing in top one-third of law school graduating class; graduation with academic honors; significant participation on the law school's law review; significant participation in the law school's moot court competition; significant participation in a clinical legal aid program; significant summer law office clerk experience; or other equivalent evidence of clearly superior achievement.
