  Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking electrical engineering or mechanical engineering students for a Summer 2024 Internship to join our team in .WJE is a global firm of engineers, architects, and materials scientists committed to helping solve, repair, and avoid problems in the built world since 1956. In 2019, Stafford Bandlow Engineering (SBE) officially joined WJE, bringing more than 150 years of combined experience consulting on all aspects of heavy movable structures.At WJE, we spend almost as much time in the field, up close and personal with our projects, as we do in the office. As an electrical engineering or mechanical engineering intern, you will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical applications primarily related to the electrical systems or machinery for heavy movable structures including movable bridges, rail transit, locks and dams, ferry terminals, and cranes.Responsibilities:Electrical Engineering Interns Assist Project Teams with:On-site movable bridge inspections, condition surveys, and testingPreparation of reports, presentation material, specifications, and test proceduresPreparation of drawings and plans associated with electrical power and control systems design for various types of movable bridge projectsDevelopment of bridge inspection reports which may include report narratives, calculations, tables, test result analysisFiling, data logging, cleaning, and test area preparationMechanical Engineering Interns Assist Project Teams with:Inspection of machinery at bridge sites which may include determining wear, alignment, and physical condition of machinery components including bearings, gears, couplings, brakes, shafts, motors, wire ropes, and hydraulic componentsPreparation of written reports including verification of data, analysis of data, preparation of figures and tables, and content reviewPreparation of balance calculations associated with the construction of new bridges or rehabilitation of existing bridgesBridge balance testing including the application strain gages and collection of data during bridge operationsDesign engineering of heavy movable structure projects using CAD and other software tools through project team participation, in-field project experience, and analysis of technical issuesQualifications:Current student with excellent academic standing in junior or senior year of a bachelor's or in a graduate program in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fieldAbility to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands, while maintaining a high standard of excellence and exceptional attention to detailEffective verbal, graphical, and written communication skillsDemonstrated leadership skills, integrity, and work ethicEnthusiasm for solving problems and curiosity about how things workPhysical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computers, printers, fax/copy machines, telephone/voice mail systems, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:Ability to attend meetings at the various office, field, and construction sitesAbility to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instrumentsAbility to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoorsAbility to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screensAbility to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.Ability to travelAbility to safely work at heightsAbility to safely use and or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipmentAbility to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazardsAbility to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locationsMedically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective EquipmentAbility to drive and safely operate a motor vehicleThe expected hourly rates for candidates who meet the above criteria range from $20.00 an hour to $27.00 an hour based on education level.
