　　Work Schedule: 8 Hr (10:00:00 AM - 6:30:00 PM)

　　Job Summary :

　　Under direction of the Principal Investigator or his/her designee and in collaboration with other members of the research team, the Intern will perform technical or laboratory procedures of a routine nature and carries out experiments or tests under an established research design. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

　　Job Responsibilities:

　　· Be assigned to work on one of two possible research projects during the summer

　　· Gain a basic understanding of human circadian rhythms and sleep research

　　· Learn basic lab procedures, including assessment of circadian rhythms via salivary melatonin, behavioral sleep assessment tools, neuropsychological testing, and delivering light treatment

　　· Learn ethical conduct of research with adolescent study participants

　　· Appreciate the level of attentive planning and team work necessary to carry out a large-scale laboratory study

　　· Practice scientific literature search skills, writing skills, and presentation skills

　　· Work 4 or 5 days each week—not always Monday through Friday, often Saturday and Sunday—on research protocols that involve working unusual schedules. Although we attempt to assign hours that correspond to time-of-day preferences, applicants must be able and willing to work on any of the following types of schedules for all or part of the summer program: “morning” shifts from 7:30am-3:30pm; “evening” shifts from 3:30pm-11:30pm; or “night” shifts from 11:30pm-7:30am. Sleep planning assistance (e.g., ear plugs, sunglasses, and light boxes) can be provided to help adjust to work schedules

　　· Carry out multiple facets of data collection with adolescent research participants in the laboratory, neuropsychological test administration, bright light treatment, and data entry

　　· Choose a topic of interest related to circadian rhythms and sleep, learn more about this topic by reading the primary scientific literature, present a literature search to the lab, and write an abstract (short one-page summary) of your presentation

　　Required Job Qualifications:

　　· High School Degree.

　　· College course work in psychology, biology, or related science; coursework must have included some laboratory components.

　　· Demonstrated effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

　　· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail essential.

　　· Demonstrated ability to multi-task, remaining flexible and managing time effectively.

　　· Ability to perform procedures requiring manual dexterity and repetitive motions.

　　· Proficiency with personal computers including Microsoft Office

　　Preferred Job Qualifications:

　　· Previous courses or lab work in sleep or circadian rhythms are preferred

　　· Attend Rush University orientation

　　· Provide 1 letter of recommendation (preferably from a professor)

　　· Submit 1 page personal statement

　　· Position is in laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious or hazardous materials.
