JOB REQUIREMENTS: Position Summary: Steel Fitter Trainees will learn avariety of skills as well as on-the-job experience during our 5-weektraining program. Trainees are taught by qualified teachers and skilledwork site mentors to prepare them for a promising career. Uponsuccessful completion of the course, steel fitter trainees will beresponsible for steel fitting equipment, parts, interiors and exteriorsof ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility. Trainingmay cover the following over the course of our 5-week training program:Introduction to FBS tools and their proper application within theshipyard. o Review of frequently used tools: stick ruler, soap stone,striker, and adjustable wrench. Thorough explanation on proper PPE to beworn while working as a shipyard Steel Fitter. Introduction to burning,grinding, and tacking. Proper setting of oxygen pressure for #2 and #8torch tips. Demonstration of their intended uses followed by hands ontraining. Proper setting of welding machines for tacking with 1/8\'\'and 3/32\" diameter electrodes in all positions. Proper edge prep forbutt and tee joints. Review of proper use and required PPE for each typeof grinder. Terminology and demonstration of equipment and tools used bya fitter. Application of fairing aids. Thorough tour of the shipyard toinclude areas relevant to a Steel Fitter. o Vessel tours o Includingareas that a Steel Fitter will be working and areas on a vessel thatthey should be aware of while preforming hot work. Examples would beengine rooms, fuel bunkers and belts, etc. Proper way to weld pad eyesfor chain jacks, chain falls, and stops for prota-powers. Make andinstall a 12\'\'x12\'\' crop in the vertical position with properradiuses and bevels. Trainees will: Successfully pass the basic SteelFitter Skills Test Provide an overall review and demonstration ofworkmanship skills learned. Adhere to attendance policies as attendanceis an essential function of the job and the training program. Have anability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on thewaterfront.
