Position Summary Information
General Summary
TheSr. Plumberperforms a full range of skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and fixtures, and gasfitting work involving considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety including utility supply and disposal systems; sewage, water, gas, and oil lines; compressed air, water closets, heaters, hydrants, valves and pumps.
Essential Functions
· Performs various plumbing assignments on utility supply and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as sewage, water, gas and oil lines, compressed air, vacuum and acid systems, water closets and heaters
· Locates and taps main headers; routes and cuts openings; places hangers for level and slope; and determines type and location of and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation and ease of maintenance of the system
· Installs plumbing equipment including seating, hooking up, and testing; installs maintains, and repairs faucets, sinks, washbowls, drinking fountains, water closets, sewers, vents, and other sanitary fixtures
· Measures, troubleshoots, repairs, cuts, threads, fits, connects, and assembles fixtures, parts, and equipment such as deep well pumps, overhead heaters, water heaters, pumps, chemical feeders, and instruments.
· Plans and lays out the placement, pitch, elevation, pressure, reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment
· Makes various types of joints using hard and soft silver solder, lead wiping, and other techniques
· Restores and repairs various systems such as unplugging sewer lines and traps, correcting leaks, overhauling, and patching valves, and draining and winterization of systems and equipment; reads and interprets plans and specifications; completes work as required by the WSSC Plumbing and Fuel Gas codes
· Coordinates the work of subordinate maintenance mechanics and contractors
· Estimates time, selects materials and maintains records of tools, materials, and labor used
· May recommend replacement of obsolete fixtures/equipment
· Inspects and troubleshoots plumbing systems for problems, damages, or necessary repairs
· Uses a variety of tools and equipment to install, maintain, repair, replace, or modify plumbing systems and natural gas and propane piping systems in compliance with the WSSC Water Plumbing and Fuel Gas codes.
· Drives motor vehicles to carry workers and haul tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to job sites; loads and unloads trucks of tools, equipment, supplies, and materials
· Completes required administrative paperwork and recordkeeping; utilizes WSSC Water’s work order applications to create service requests, enter work information, close out work orders and service requests, etc.
· Ability to work with various piping materials including but not limited to cast iron, steel, copper, PVC , and CPVC
· Utilizes and reviews construction drawings to support maintenance and troubleshooting tasks
· Performs related duties as required
Other Functions
· Serves as project lead on most projects
· May serve as a liaison with the maintenance staff and equipment owner
· Performs related duties as required
· Obtain plumbing permits for work as required by the WSSC Plumbing and Fuel Gas code.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
· Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
· Ability to work in inclement weather and fluctuating temperatures, climb ladders, scaffolding, and descend underground, as well as exposure to the hazards of working in confined spaces
· Exposure to dirty, dusty, and greasy conditions, noxious odors, chemicals, solvents, and human or animal waste occur on a regular basis
· Use of safety equipment and/or protective clothing is required
· Ability to work in inclement weather and fluctuating temperatures, climb ladders, scaffolding, and descend underground, as well as exposure to the hazards of working in confined spaces
· The employee in this position is required to respond to after-hours emergency service calls and may be placed on stand-by duty during severe weather or other urgent conditions
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
· Extensive knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the plumbing trade
· Knowledge of WSSC Water plumbing and fuel gas code.
· Considerable knowledge of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health ( MOSH ) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), building, and fire codes
· Considerable knowledge of piping systems involving water, sewer, natural gas, propane gas, air, and venting requirements
· Ability to work from construction drawings, schematics, and specifications
· Skill in operating plumbing hand tools, power tools, drain augers, hydro jets, and light construction equipment
· Ability to work effectively with workers from different disciplines
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
· High School diploma (or equivalent)
· 6+ years of plumbing and gasfitting experience
·Current WSSC -licensed Master Plumber/Gasfitteror eligible reciprocal State-licensed Master Plumber/Gasfitter (Maryland or Virginia only)
Additional Requirements
· Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer
· Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
· On-call, standby duty, and mandatory overtime work may be required
Preferences
·Strong industrial or commercial plumbing experience preferred
· Ability to lead installations of major plumbing systems
Salary$33.30 - $56.60 per hour
