Librarians support the University’s efforts toward meaningful education, enabling learners from diverse backgrounds to achieve intellectual, cultural, and social enrichment. This librarian also acts as the official campus Archivist for the MSU Billings Special Collections.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:Archivist:•Manage the Special Collections at the MSU Billings Library.•Provides reference services for all collections in the Special Collections department.•Coordinates and facilitates access to archival materials by students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the community, whether in-person or online.•Provides access to archival collections by compiling finding aids, creating collection-level records or metadata descriptions to assist online researchers.•Design, maintain, and update the Special Collections digital presence.•Creates, develops, and implements the collections management policies; archives procedures; procedures manual; departmental goals and preservation planning.•Acts as an enthusiastic advocate, and proactively builds partnerships across the University and the community at large; deeply engaged in building relationships with communities to support collecting, preserving, and showcasing diverse perspectives and documents in the history of MSU Billings University.•Manages student assistants and interns in processing archival collections and developing students’ professional skills.•Advocates for and educates on opportunities of open archives.•Keeps abreast of developments in archives and special collections standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training.•Contribute to the Library’s efforts to secure additional resources, especially through grants and other fundraising opportunities.Archival Print & Ephemera Materials:•Coordinates appraisal, acquisition, description, storage, access to, and preservation of University records, ephemera, and photograph collections in all formats.•Process acquisitions by assessing collections, establishing priorities for processing and/or digitization.•Ensures accurate and up-to-date inventories of archived materials and maintains organizational systems.•Evaluates and coordinates the housing/re-housing and stabilization of archives.Digital Born Materials:•Develop, document, and implement procedures for accessioning, arranging, describing, and providing access to digitized and born-digital materials through the Preservica platform.•Develops metadata to support the discovery and management of digital content.•Ensures accessibility of the digital resources of the University Archives and other special collections by determining the appropriate intellectual organization and digital storage structure, analyzing the intellectual content of the source material, and conducting historical research for the preparation of metadata descriptions•Contributes to the success of Special Collections and Library Services by performing all other duties as assigned.General:•Provide reference services to library users in-person, via phone, email, chat, video conferencing, and other emerging technologies. May include evening and weekend hours.•Use new and emerging communication technology, digital resources, and social networking to best promote and deliver library services and connect with students and faculty both on campus and at a distance.•Provide library instruction tailored to classes in various disciplines, emphasizing information literacy to support research across the curriculum. Library instruction is offered in-person, video conferencing, and online tutorials. This can include:oFoundational library research skillsoHigher level discipline specific instructionoPersonalized one-on-one consultations•Teach sections of a 3-credit information literacy course, LSCI 125 Research in the Information Age, as part of the Global Academic Skills category of General Education. Classes may be online, in-person, Hybrid, or HyFlex.•Work as a liaison with one or more colleges/departments and develop relationships with faculty and staff to support research, teaching, and learning.•Participate in collection management activities in assigned subject areas, such as book selection and evaluation of electronic resources to ensure relevant and appropriate resources for users based on collection development policy.•Evaluate and update library resources and services focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion.•Promote activities associated with Open Educational Resources (OER).•Develop research tools and guides to find information resources with an emphasis on remote access making library resources available anywhere, anytime. •Engage in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both personal goals and departmental objectives.•Serve actively on University committees and engage in other campus activities and events.•Participate actively in local, regional, and national library communities, including the TRAILS (Treasure State Academic Information & Library Services) Consortium and others.•Other duties as assigned.QUALITIES:•Sound knowledge of current trends in the special collections field, including in-depth command of digital issues as they relate to special collections•Focus on user-centered customer service•Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, organization, and time management skills•Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with a wide range of individuals•Ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment•Knowledge of and commitment to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in collection building, instruction, and throughout library activities and learning environments•Ability to attend to accuracy, attention to detail and discretion, and the necessity for confidentiality•Ability to analyze situations, solve problems, and make sound decisions•Excellent project planning and management skills•Awareness of current and emerging trends in library services•Flexibility and enthusiasm in a continually changing environmentPHYSICAL DEMANDS:Requires sufficient mobility to work in a library setting, operate office equipment, able to lift, push or pull at least 40 lbs. Additional physical demands may include: stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching overhead and horizontally, repetitive hand movements, sitting for extended periods of time, and 6-8 hours of screen time per day.Education Required:•Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.Experience Required:•Experience in an academic library, special collections, archives, museum, and or/other cultural heritage collections•Recent experience in reference and user service areas•Experience with Library Management Systems (LMS) and specialized library software•Background in using and teaching web-based databases, discovery service, internet searching and traditional library reference materials•Experience training and supervising staff and student employees•Experience providing instruction and research support in an academic library environment•Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a member of the MSU Billings communityExperience Preferred:•Understanding of contemporary archival practices, trends, and emerging technologies for managing, processing, and providing access to archival collections in physical and digital formats.•Experience working and evidence in education or training pertaining to special collections and/or university archives including reference and/or archival processing, arrangement, and description of collection in multiple formats, including digital born.•Ability to provide careful and ethical stewardship for existing and future collections•Experience working with content management systems (ContentDM, Preservica, Past Perfect, Islandora, ArchivesSpace, etc.).•Knowledge of current metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and other emerging data standards.•An ability to master over time the wide range of materials represented in the collection.•Experience working in a library consortium environment.•Working knowledge of teaching and learning strategies utilizing the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.•Experience planning, organizing, and promoting outreach activities.•Involvement and active participation in professional organizations and professional development.•Working knowledge of best practices relating to copyright, fair use, intellectual property, and scholarly communication related to libraries, archives, or special collections.Montana State University Billings is committed to providing a working and learning environment free from discrimination.
