Job Description

The Scientist's primary responsibilities are to provide technical and regulatory oversight for concerns, issues, questions, and activities associated with Con Edison's hazardous and non-hazardous waste and chemical management procedures, general instructions and environmental specifications.
Communicate with regulators on the Company's behalf. The Scientist will provide guidance to EH&S representatives and operations for compliance to all federal, state and local environmental regulations and laws.
Ensure that safe work practices are followed, and the environment is fully protected in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations.
Work with the regulatory subject matter experts to evaluate proposed changes to regulations and laws governing waste and chemicals and assist in coordinating company involvement and advocacy strategies. The Scientist shall work with EH&S Operations to develop and administer training.
Respond to agency inquiries and provide clarification or verification to data that has been submitted to the agencies.
Participate in agency inspections.
Assist operating departments in developing cost-effective and compliant strategies for managing waste and chemicals.
Act as liaison between EH&S and operating organizations in interfacing with government agencies.
Develop Quality Assurance protocols that will outline the intent, methods and scope of the review.
Perform Quality Control inspections as required.
Participate in EH&S Emergency Resource Mobilization during emergencies. As necessary, be available to work overtime and shift work.
Lead company initiatives to identify environmental risks, and work with operational organizations to develop and implement mitigation plans.
Utilize Con Edison's internal environmental management applications including EMIS (Environmental Management Information System) that provides manifest information, Provisional EPA ID System that provides specific EPA ID request information, and single EPA ID reporting.
Respond to environmental incidents, including petroleum and oil spills, steam main failures and chemical releases.
Assess company locations to confirm regulatory compliance.
Required Education/Experience
Master's Degree and 2 years of related work experience or
Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of related work experience or
Associate's Degree and 5 years of related work experience or
High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of related work experience
Preferred Education/Experience
Master's Degree Environmental Science, Biology Environmental Management, Engineering or related fields and 3 years of related work experience TSCA, RCRA, hazardous and solid waste and chemical management
Bachelor's Degree Environmental Science, Biology Environmental Management, Engineering or related fields and 5 years related work experience TSCA, RCRA, hazardous and solid waste and chemical management
Relevant Work Experience
3-5 years Professional experience working on issues requiring oversight of federal and state waste programs. Required
2 years Professional experience in environmental science, chemistry, and/or waste management. Required
Candidates must be capable of demonstrating their environmental experience. Required
Must be a highly motivated individual. Demonstrate a strong Commitment to Excellence and understand the vital importance of personal accountability. Required
Completion of Company CEHSP program as soon as possible. Successful completion of position-specific EH&S as applicable. Required
Ability to effectively interact with various levels of personnel. Required
Strong team player. Demonstrated ability to obtain results. Required
Must have excellent organizational skills and ability to successfully complete multiple tasks without compromising quality or timeliness. Required

Must demonstrate proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and/or an ability to quickly become proficient with database packages including Microsoft Office, EMIS, SHIMS, and Maximo. Required
Must be flexible in handling multiple work assignments, changing priorities and various deadlines. Required
