The Trainees in these positions provide environmental health services by assisting in facility planning, surveys, safety management, injury prevention activities, and other duties as assigned. For additional information Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) | Indian Health Service (IHS) Responsibilities Administrative and Technical Duties: Under close administrative and technical supervision by an Environmental Health Specialist, the incumbent will assist with the planning, developing, and implementing of a comprehensive environmental health services program for assigned tribes. Particular emphasis is placed on: food safety, safe drinking water, children's environmental health, vector zoonotic diseases surveillance and control, hazardous materials, solid waste, and other environmental health topics. Establishment types include schools, Head Starts, childcare centers, gaming facilities, health care, recreational facilities, water and wastewater operations, lodging, aquatic centers, industrial operations, and other establishments on assigned reservations. Assist with Projects, Program Development, Data Analysis, and Program Evaluation: Under close administrative and technical supervision by an Environmental Health Specialist, provide professional consultation in institutional environmental health program initiatives, emergency management, and special projects. It may also help evaluate existing program areas or develop new ones. Compile and analyze data, and organize information into report forms for special studies. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-05: Actively pursuing a full-4 year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree. Prior to the start of the externship, applicant must have completed at least 30 semester hours in a science or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science). GS-07: Demonstrating the basic professional knowledge of the concepts, principles, practices, regulations, and techniques used in developing, administering, monitoring, planning and evaluating environmental health services programs in order to perform routine and conventional environmental health assignments to provide routine environmental health activities to a large number of programs and operations in areas such as food safety, safe drinking water, children's environmental health, vector control, hazardous materials, solid waste, and other environmental health elements. OR One (1) full year of graduate level education related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical sciences appropriate to the position). OR Completion of a bachelors degree in a field related to environmental health with Superior Academic Achievement. Superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical sciences appropriate to the position). Superior Academic Achievement is based on class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership. OR A combination of education and experience that meets the requirements for the GS-7 as described above.
