Flow studies involve growing cells in sterile culture, isolating cells from blood or tissue, taking a flow cytometry course, running samples on the flow cytometer, and then analyzing the data. (10%) Inject mice with tumor cell lines and measuring tumor growth using the latest bioluminescent imaging techniques. (35%) Assist with drug production - involving purification via column chromatography techniques including molecular size exclusion, ion exchange chromatography, staph A columns, etc. 20% General lab support (4%) Assist with experiment and process documentation (4%) Discuss and suggest possible experimental approaches with supervisor (4%) Oversee use and maintenance of laboratory equipment (4%) Stay up-to-date with current best practices/protocols (4%) Other duties as assigned Job description: Our research group is small, but we have recently received a new Department of Defense grant to develop new immunotherapy drugs for use in the companion dog oncology clinic. We are looking for someone that can readily learn flow cytometry, functional assays, and assist in the large scale production of these drugs for clinical canine use. The work is important since it involves the development of new treatment approaches for owners of dogs with terminal cancer. What we learn in dogs is directly applicable to humans since dogs with cancer are considered the best model for human disease. The position requires dedication, flexibility, and the ability to follow detailed instructions. Since the group is small, communication skills and detailed data-keeping and analysis are mandatory. The position does not involve contact with dogs, but some mouse work may be required on occasion. Candidates with aspirations of professional graduate school are welcome, but at least a two year commitment is preferred Qualifications All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
