Corresponding with collaborating labs. Sending and receiving samples. Organizing and maintaining the physical lab space. Managing laboratory safety. 30% Project and data management Organizing workshops and our Google Drive system for managing projects and their data. Coordinating with group members towards data sharing. Ensuring that geospatial and other data are readily available in organized formats. Providing materials for grant proposals. Organizing and coordinating team meetings for collaborative projects. 30% Field and research support Organizing field research. Managing equipment and supplies. Organizing, managing, and distributing samples, data, and other research outputs. Coordinating field researchers for data entry and upload. Participating in field work. Constructing and repairing instrumentation and tools. This category may also include work to develop research products with other group members, including code, data, and scientific publications. 10% Discretionary time Approximately 4 hours per week should be spent at the researcher's discretion. This can be, for example, to develop independent research work and goals, co-write scientific research papers with other group members, design new systems for research, build cooperative systems for work with other research groups, or expand our work in the direction of the successful candidate's interests. Qualifications Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience. Basic knowledge of laboratories, tools and hardware, GIS, and field methods. Strong organizational skills. Experience with field research. Ability to work with hand and power tools, and to carry 50 lbs over distances of 1-10 miles. Willingness to be flexible in working hours when research objectives require this (e.g., overnight and/or weekend field research). Preferred qualifications: Experience with backcountry travel WFA and/or WFR certification Computer-programming ability Engineering and/or mechanical background (hands-on or formally taught) Experience with hydrology and/or geomorphology Clean driver's license About the Department The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research lab and educational facility under the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
