  Stanford Health Policy is the joint working name of the Center for Health Policy (CHP) in the Freeman Spogli Institute and the Department of Health Policy in the School of Medicine. We conduct rigorous research that lays the foundation for better domestic and international health policy and health care. Drawing upon our multidisciplinary research, Stanford Health Policy offers innovative educational programs from the undergraduate to the graduate level. We are seeking a Research Assistant (Social Science Research Professional 1) for a 1-year fixed term.

  This position can accommodate a start date of up to summer 2024.

  This position is based in Stanford, California, and the position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

  Duties include:

  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory. Assist with advancing research projects through completion of tasks during project planning, analysis, publication and dissemination, and reporting to funding agencies.

  • Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.

  • Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.

  • Conduct literature searches and write literature summaries and manuscripts. Assist with project planning and model parameterization by reviewing current literature, clinical guidelines, and other relevant data sources.

  • Build and organize data as requested by PI or supervisor; use common statistical programs such as R, and collaborative version control platforms including GitHub.

  • Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.

  • Assist with development, communication, and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include website content, policy briefs, etc. Assist with opportunities for dissemination of publications and guidance.

  The expected pay range for this position is $27.40 to $36.54 per hour.

  DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge either through education or experience of mathematics and theories, assumptions, principles, methods, and techniques of statistics, especially those applicable to health-related research: t-tests, ANOVA and ANCOVA, linear regression, logistic regression, and hierarchical random effects modeling (HLM).  Knowledge either through education or experience of commonly used statistical software packages such as SAS, STATA and R. Familiarity either through education or experience with presenting and explaining probabilistic and statistical concepts to researchers and/or trainees. Strong organizational skills, the ability to establish priorities and coordinate multiple tasks, and to work independently. Ability to work effectively as a team member on projects with a diverse group of research staff. Ability to write clear and concise professional reports, memos, and correspondence. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office programs to prepare project documentation, memos, reports, and presentations. Ability to prepare tables and graphs and summarize data. Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with coworkers, affiliated researchers and staff  Excellent attention to detail. Holds US Census Bureau “Special Sworn Status”, or has ability to clear US Census Bureau “Special Sworn Status” designation upon starting the position.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work with human study participants

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.

  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operates foot and/or hand controls.
