POSITION PURPOSE
The University of Washington School of Drama (SoD) is seeking a person to join our staff as Production Manager (PM). The Production Manager works with the Executive Director, The School Administrator, faculty, and staff to manage the design and production processes for all SoD productions. This includes working with student and guest creative artists, a professional production staff, student production crews, and graduate student employees in production. The Production Manager plays a critical role in serving our educationally centered mission in a way that is sustainable with the operational resources of the School. The PM is a member of the SoD senior leadership team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage all aspects of SoD productions, keeping the educational mission of the School at the forefront, aligning pedagogical goals with available resources.
Create and manage budgets, season calendar, and project specific schedules.
Attend and lead technical rehearsals, production meetings, and design processes.
Supervise a professional production staff of twelve.
Collaborate with production shop heads and staff to ensure safety in all aspects of production
Work with faculty regarding student design and production assignments and engage outside employees in design and production as necessary.
Acquire rights to plays and ensure compliance with agreements; purchase and distribute scripts.
Hire outside guest artists, stage managers, and over-hire production staff as needed; work with academic area heads regarding student employee assignments related to production.
Hire and supervise house managers.
Work with Drama 101 instructor to arrange student ushers for public performances.
Work with Undergraduate Advisor on crew assignments.
Arrange and manage auditions, callbacks, and casting.
Serve as a resource for students interested in production. This may include direct mentorship or sharing of resources for outside mentorship.Administrative (15%)
Serve as member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team.
Craft and advise on School policy.
Attend necessary SoD and College of Arts and Sciences meetings as needed.
Manage, track, and reconcile budgets related to production and facilities
Manage income budgets from ticket sales, rentals, gifts, and endowments.
Keep up to date on University, College, and School trainings and policies.Venue Operations (15%)
Collaborate with SoD Building Coordinators.
Liaise with University personnel from Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety.
Keep up to date on building safety requirements.
Attend Building Coordinator meetings, as needed.
Manage fire drills and associated documents.
Participate in capital planning with faculty and staff.Manage Staff (10%)
Interview and hire staff, guest artists, and over-hire employees
Assign and review work; conduct annual performance reviews, and take corrective action up to and through termination, as needed.
Hold regular meetings with all production staff.
Ensure alignment between the educational goals of the School and the available staffing resources. Advise on how to maintain such alignment as necessary. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree and three years professional theater production experience. A Master’s degree related to theatre production may be considered in lieu of two years of professional experience. Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS : Qualifications/Skills:Understanding of both professional and educational theater making processes; superior skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel); advanced skills in using and creating spreadsheets and internet collaboration tools. Ability to analyze and understand issues pertaining to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion + Access. Ability to read a script and assess requirements in regards to staffing, budgeting and design. Experience reading scaled drawings and drawing packages. Knowledge of theatrical safety conventions and laws. General knowledge of all theater crafts: scenic construction, rigging, automation, scenic painting, costume construction, wardrobe, wigs, lighting, sound, projections, and props. Superior communication skills (English primarily). Strong budgeting skills. Ability to manage employee relations with a wide variety of staff with diverse backgrounds.Physical Ability Ability to perform administrative work using a computer for extended periods of time; up to 8 hours a day. Ability to transfer computer work to performance venues and monitor tech rehearsals (typically at a tech table while using a laptop) for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds with assistance if required.Other Skills, Ability and/or KnowledgeHighly developed organizational skills and the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously. The ability to manage shifting and competing priorities, and discretion; flexibility in projects and schedule; attention to detail. Ability to execute projects efficiently and according to schedule. Ability to work independently and to maintain a positive work atmosphere.Special Hours Requirements Work schedule varies and includes frequent evening and weekend hours as well as many weeks in which more than 40 hours are required.
