Job Description:
Principal Simulation & Analysis Engineer – Structural Analysis
Plumbing & Electric Division
The Principal Simulation & Analysis Engineer – Structural Analysis will use their significant design and analysis background to analyze static and dynamic load cases on power equipment components and assemblies - offering fast, reliable recommendations for revisions to increase robustness and optimize weight, size, and cost. The ideal candidate will be extremely strong in mechanical design with a passion for linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert with Static and Transient structural FEA (linear & non-linear), material testing and fatigue life analysis/prediction.
Overview
The Plumbing & Electric Structural Design Analyst will support design of new products and improvement and maintenance of existing products, for the Milwaukee Tool Force Logic Engineering team.
You’ll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:
Directly support New Product Development and Advanced Engineering projects with Finite Element Analysis of components and assemblies, with a focus on stress/strain evaluations
Conduct linear and non-linear finite element analysis
Conduct modal analysis
Conduct deflection analysis
Conduct fatigue analysis and durability calculations
Consult with teams on loading and boundary conditions
Conduct Impact simulation
Direct and work with test personnel
Estimate or verify loading conditions based on failure analysis
Recommend geometry or material changes for design robustness as well as weight, size, and cost optimizations
Execute analysis on competitive parts and products
Be highly agile – use highly effective communication skills to quickly understand the depth of work required and provide trade-offs of accuracy versus time to complete analysis. Articulate and prioritize time constraints where needed
Will receive analysis requests from a variety of customers – must be strong in prioritization, timing, and scope discussions
Mentor, train, and share knowledge to increase overall FEA capabilities of the department
Tasks include but are not limited to analysis of structural concepts and existing components, dynamic analysis of components, benchmarking competitive designs. Analysis and simulations of structural systems will be accomplished using standard analysis practices utilizing linear and nonlinear FEA, dynamics, fatigue evaluations and test data processing
In this position the analyst will analyze and virtually validate designs, assists in processes such as DFMEA, and help the design team achieve their product performance and cost goals, help resolve structural issues in test and validation activity, and help the design team achieve reliability targets and meet product development deadlines
Analyst is responsible for keeping informed of engineering and industry technological developments, and evolving practices through field contacts, professional technical societies, associated conferences, and customer interfaces
This person will be responsible for creating Standard Operating Procedures for doing FEA and test work and partner with other SMEs (internal and external to METCO)
What TOOLS you’ll bring with you:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
5+ years of mechanical design experience
8+ years of Finite Element Analysis experience
Proficient in CAD – NX, Solidworks, or similar
Very strong proficiency in Ansys, Altair software packages.
Ansys Fluent experience is a plus but not a substitute for professional mechanical design experience
Ability to quickly grasp component and assembly functionality, determine load cases and constraints, and execute varied complexity levels of analysis depending on criticality and timing to New Product Development team members
5 plus years of prior work experience with the following: Ansys, Abaqus and Abaqus Explicit FEA software, Hypermesh, and Optistruct software, Fatigue Software such as Ncode, Mechanical principles, kinematics, structural materials, and standard machine and mechanism components
Highly motivated self-driver with never satisfied, always improving attitude
Strong root cause and failure analysis aptitude
Candidate must have a very strong design background paired with Finite Element Analysis experience
Working knowledge of other analysis types such as CFD, Vehicle Dynamics, System Modeling, NVH, Soil Modeling, particle flow, DEM, gear and transmission analysis, and analysis of rotational components
Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:
A positive attitude, strong drive to achieve goals and succeed
Ability to learn and demonstrate proficiency in new global processes and systems.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to details
A working knowledge of general computer applications (Excel, Word, etc.)
Experience in structural design, rubber component design, vehicle ride quality & NVH.
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) issues, problems, and observations of work being performed.
Additionally, ability to communicate across multiple levels and work groups
Demonstrated ability to work with cross discipline teams as well as being a strong individual contributor.
Ability to work with minimal supervision managing multiple projects and tasks.
