  Description

  The Giblin lab (https://www.mbl.edu/user/5) is searching for a Postdoc to join a Simons Foundation-funded project focused on how oscillatory water flow through coastal marsh sediment, driven by plant transpiration and by tides, impacts biogeochemistry in the rhizosphere. The position is for two years, extendable to 3.5 years pending performance. This is a multi-investigator project. The focus of this post-doctoral position will be on iron and sulfur dynamics in the sediments but there will be opportunities to collaborate with other investigators on controls of carbon dynamic and the role of iron in producing reactive oxygen species. As part of this project, we hope to develop new isotope techniques to examine S and Fe in the rhizosphere in both the lab and the field. The position requires a self-motivated participant who enjoys working on new techniques. They should also enjoy learning from and sharing ideas with others. There will be ample opportunities for the Post-doc to develop their own expanded project. The position will be in Woods Hole but travel to the field site at Plum Island will be expected as needed.

  Rolling review of applications will begin 2/19/2024, with an ideal start date in spring of 2024.

  Basic Qualifications

  PhD in ecology, geology or geochemistry with an emphasis on biogeochemistry

  Experience with the cycling of S and Fe in sediments and some experience with stable isotopes as tracers strongly preferred. Familiarity with wetland ecosystems a plus.

  Special Physical Requirements

  The applicant must be capable of working in field sites that are accessed by small boats, or by walking over the marsh. Typical field trips last 2-4 days and can involve significant amounts of time outside in many weather conditions. During the field trips the post-doc will stay at the field station near Newbury. This project will coordinate logistics and share data with the Plum Island Ecosystems Long-Term Ecological Research site (https://pie-lter.ecosystems.mbl.edu).
