The Role

Lumen is growing our Cloud footprint as we continue the strategy of retiring legacy on-prem systems. Confluent Kafka is a core component of our future architecture and data streaming. We are seeking a highly skilled Kafka Engineer to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will have extensive experience with Kafka and a strong understanding of distributed systems and. You will work closely with our architects and internal customers to document, design, implement, and manage Kafka clusters across multiple cloud environments (Azure/AWS/GCP) to ensure efficient data streaming and processing.

This is a remote opportunity open to candidates located anywhere in the U.S.

The Main Responsibilities

Design, document, and deploy Kafka clusters, ensuring high availability and scalability.

Monitor and optimize Kafka performance, addressing any issues promptly.

Document, develop and maintain data streaming applications using Kafka Streams or similar frameworks.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate Kafka with other systems.

Document and implement security measures to protect data streams.

Design/recommend or implement automated guardrails

Provide support and troubleshooting for Kafka-related issues.

What We Look For in a Candidate

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience with typically 8+ years in Enterprise-level support and design experience, strong in operations and application administration design

Deep understanding of Kafka, including its architecture, components, and data stream handling

Strong understanding of Application-to-Application integration using Kafka

Proficiency in Java or Scala

Distributed Systems Knowledge: data replication, partitioning, and fault tolerance

Knowledge of data streaming concepts and frameworks

Proficiency with Linux/Unix systems and networking, including command-line tools and shell scripting

Strong networking skills for configuring and optimizing Kafka clusters

Ability to monitor and log Kafka clusters to ensure smooth operation

Knowledge of cloud platforms and their integration with Kafka

Excellent problem-solving, documentation and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong understanding of virtualization concepts and technologies

Broad range of technical skills with a strong desire to constantly expand skillset

Positive, self-motivated individual who can complete goals independently

Kafka certification

Knowledge of Enterprise Application Integration patterns

Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$103,711 - $138,281 in these states: AL AR AZ FL GA IA ID IN KS KY LA ME MO MS MT ND NE NM OH OK PA SC SD TN UT VT WI WV WY

$108,896 - $145,195 in these states: CO HI MI MN NC NH NV OR RI

$114,082 - $152,109 in these states: AK CA CT DC DE IL MA MD NJ NY TX VA WA
