Summary Full-time position for a Physician with fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Iowa City VA Medical Center with affiliation with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. This will include up to 6 eighths (0.75 FTE) at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. Responsibilities The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. The provider is responsible for outpatient clinical care of patients in need of Hepatology evaluation and ongoing care, Liver transplant evaluation, Post-Liver transplant care, Inpatient Hepatology Consultations for hospitalized patients at the facility, interpretation of Fibroscan reports, as well as shared call coverage with the Hepatology group. Experience and expertise in Transplant Hepatology including certification in this is preferred. Training in Gastroenterology and ability to care for patients and supervise trainees in the care of patients with a full range of gastroenterology conditions. Ability to do GI endoscopies is desirable, but not required. Proficiency in electronic medical record usage is necessary. Patient care will require occasional virtual patient visits (video visits), accurate and prompt completion of patient care documentation and follow up of test results. The provider will be responsible for teaching GI Fellows, house staff, medical residents, and students periodically. The provider may be assigned duty as a supervising or collaborating physician for a mid-level provider (NP or PA). The provider must maintain certification necessary for provision of the above care in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, including ABIM certification, ACLS, and all hospital required maintenance / continued training. An additional 1 eighth (.125 FTE) is available for those providers with inclination to providing administrative assistance with consult triaging and unit logistical work. The incumbent is expected to work at the Iowa City VA HCS for 6/8ths and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 2/8ths. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of Internal Medicine residency program approved the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
