Scope:
Phlebotomist responsibilities:Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) accordingto established procedures. Identifies patients using two patient identifiers.Labels specimens and specimen containers accurately.Determines the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc. specimencollections. Collects and receives specimens into the laboratory utilizingcomputer protocols including processing, preparation, centrifugation,aliquot and routing of specimens, to include reference lab. Ensures thetimely transport and processing of all patient specimens for testing.Files patients lab reports, requisitions charges for the business office andsends reports to outside hospitals and clinics. Posts charges and reconcilesinvoices. Investigates complex bills, as needed. Researches and resolves anyquestionable patient orders. Enters patient demographic data accurately.Maintains required lab records and logs, collects statistics for reports andother clerical duties as directed by manager.Performs complex specimen set-up. Enters complex orders and results. Packs andships infectious materials. Communicates any special situations related tospecimens or testing with all appropriate staff and management.Cleans and maintains equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators. Recordsdaily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas. Orderssupplies and maintains sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomyservices. Assists in the training of new associates and students. Acts as areceptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.Performs patient registration and test ordering and specimen processing asappropriate.Documents and communicates information thoroughly and accurately. Utilizesequipment according to depar mental guidelines, maintaining all equipment asper guidelines. Ensures equipment and supplies are maintained in appropriateworking order. Evaluates and utilizes inventory appropriately, assists withinventory control as needed.Maintains a neat and clean work area. Disposes of waste appropriately. Cleansbench areas and equipment. Restocks supplies as appropriate. Maintains thewashroom and performs washroom functions as appropriate.
