About Occupational Therapist Assistant

  Job Description

  The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant to carry out prescribed occupational therapy activities. Help give instructions in basic living skills; collect client data during treatment sessions; and perform related work as required to facilitate the rehabilitation of clients under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. Join our Physical Medicine and Rehab department to work with our dedicated team and our patients in need.

  Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  Assist Occupational Therapist in assessing and evaluating clients' abilities and needs and in the selection of appropriate activities.Delivers a wide variety of occupational therapy services, including training in activities of daily living, normalization experiences, community skills experiences, fine motor and prevocational skills, sensory stimulation; selected perceptual-motor and sensory motor skills and behavior management by implementing programs to assist clients in reaching their maximum potential.Implements treatment programs as designed by the Occupational Therapist in developing basic living skills such as personal grooming, dressing, mealtime, cooking, budgeting, etc. to encourage independent social functioning.Evaluates clients'/patients' responses; measures changes and development in relation to treatment goals; and records data as requested, both orally and in writing.Attends and participates in client treatment plan development and review meetings with interdisciplinary team.Counsels clients/patients regarding progress, goals and plans as requested under supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.Participates in the in-service education program to enhance skills; may assist in the planning and implementation of such programs.Able to treat patients, taking into consideration age and pertinent medical issues related to aging.Coordinates staff in-service education for the Rehab Dept. to provide ongoing training.

  Required Qualifications:

  Interact with people who under physical and emotional stress.Ability to establish rapport with others.Can exercise sound judgement.Ability to both give/follow written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.Maintain accurate records and can prepare general reports.Necessary competency to treat adult and geriatric patients.Knowledge of the terminology used in connection with occupational therapy.Experience of the treatment methods, techniques and procedures used in occupational therapy.Understand the types and uses of equipment and materials used in providing occupational therapy.Experience in human anatomy and physiology as applied to occupational therapy.Informed of the principles of human growth and development as applied to occupational therapy.Experience in the types and uses of orthopedic appliances and uses of prosthetic devices.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Knowledge of LSH, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines.Understands the types and uses of agency forms.Aware of the types and availability of public or private organizations and resources for providing occupational therapy.Operates computer software programs effectively, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, in order to maintain records, data bases, and communications.

  About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

  Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

  Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

  Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Occupational Therapy Assistant license issued by the Board of Allied Health Professions in accordance with Chapter 667 of the Acts of 1982.
