The primary function of the OBT in Labor and Delivery is to serve as a “scrub tech.” Working within the sterile field and applying the principles of asepsis, the OBT provides the obstetrician with the necessary equipment and supplies used for the cesarean section procedure. The OBT works within the OR and delivery rooms, both pre- and post-operatively, to aid in maintaining the OR and delivery suites, equipment and instrumentation for optimum use.
Other responsibilities include assisting the RN/MD during vaginal delivery and initial newborn care. The OBT works within the delivery room to provide the MD or RN attending the newborn with necessary equipment help with forms, and with the patient as needed. The OBT assists with purchasing and stocking supplies for assigned areas, and possesses the ability to float to other perinatal areas as needed. The OBT anticipates department needs and assists with unit clerk responsibilities, e.g., telephone, charts, and helping with visitors.
Minimum Education: High School Graduate Surgical Technical School Minimum Experience/Knowledge: Minimum of one (1) year experience in the labor and delivery setting preferred.
