The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a National Senior Advocacy Advisor. Location of the selected candidate is flexible provided the location allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.

The National Senior Advocacy Advisor is responsible for effectively furthering the American Heart Association’s field advocacy public policy priorities through hands-on advisement, mentoring, training and technical support. This position will facilitate the successful development and implementation of customized and strategic technical assistance plans in collaboration with the Vice President Field Advocacy and other internal and external partners. Leadership/assistance provided will emcompass the entire range of policy change activities including strategic campaign planning, implementation, legislation/regulation drafting, media, grassroots, grasstops and coalition development and management.

Responsibilities

Provide consultation services to American Heart Association field staff which includes, but is not limited to: setting public policy priorities and goals in support of the Association’s public policy agenda; assessing the environment and assisting in the development of strategic campaign plans; reviewing and revising legislation/regulation; providing strategic campaign guidance; providing individualized trainings; providing individualized campaign resources; facilitating the sharing of best practices across the country.

Provide strategic leadership by facilitating issue specific priority and goal setting in support the Association’s field advocacy public policy agenda.

Develop training and technical resource tools used to empower Association field staff and volunteers to effectively advocate for the organization’s key public policy priorities.

Closely supervise and track community public policy issues of concern as well as emerging areas of interest; initiates appropriate activities as needed.

Develop and implement strategic customized technical assistance plans vital to successfully support field level public policy efforts.

Liaison with the regions, partners and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and catalyze opportunities to advance the American Heart Association’s field advocacy public policy priorities.

Manage issue specific Association grants which includes the hiring and supervision of staff and/or contractors.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health, a related area or equivalent work experience.

Minimum of five (5) years of:

Experience and success in legislative and regulatory strategic campaign plan oversight.

Experience building and managing issue advocacy coalition(s.

Experience developing and implementing grassroots and media advocacy tactics.

Prior experience mentoring, developing and training staff.

Outstanding oral and written communications skills.

Demonstrated skills in policy analysis and technical (legislative and regulatory) writing.

Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.

Must be able to travel overnight approx. 25% of the time.

Compensation Benefits

Expected pay range will be $90,000 to $100,000. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials to the pay range may apply. The American Heart Association reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range.

Work-Life Harmonization – The Association offers Paid Time Off (PTO) at a minimum of 16 days per year for new employees. The number of days will increase based on seniority level. You will also have a total of 12 paid holidays off each year, which includes several days off at the end of the year.
